I'm guessing the reason it sometimes goes down to 2-3mb/s is because you're with virgin, and when you download a lot of data virgin will cap your speed to 2.5mb/s, details here: http://allyours.virginmedia.com/html...t/traffic.html
Lol, it doesn't work like that. The speeds on the speed test relate to the speed of your connection, so on your 10mb/s connection you got 9788kb/s (9.7mb/s).
Gotta find the server thats best for you. Maidenhead is my fastest although the London server is way close
But yeah there's no northern locations for england to do a geographical accurate speedtest for you right madduck? Still if you can download faster than you get on a speedtest you should be happy
the fastest run i ever had was one to paris :s, and it only happened once - ping was naff though.. the best prior was Torshavn but i think that has gone now.
i wouldn't trust it and just download a linux iso or something to test. far more accurate representation of maximum speed, if you can download accelerator it then you are actually testing your line rather than other peoples infrastructure

This is what you get to live at the end of a rural line
... It's when I see those >10000 kb/s that my eyes water.
Been with Onetel since Sept 2004 (my first step into broadband), first on 512/256, then upgraded to 2048/256 for free. Faultless service and truly unlimited DL, no fair usage.
However, it cost £30pm inc a phone package, inability to get faster speeds, I made the reluctant change to leave and sign up with Be, of which line activation is Monday!
edit -
line activation was instant 12 midnight lol...
i'm sure i can get more with tweaking

I'm with sky. £10 month for 8mb broadband. Could of had 16mb, but phone line can't handle it. Excellent service so far. I'm more than happy.
