Re: Your broadband speed - post here

mines pretty laughable, im currently on a 1mbps BT connection which is soon to be updated (in the next month or so) to the 8mbps version i cant complain though i get nearly the speeds that are advertised. Next year my area is next in development for the 2010 CN project by BT so i should see a dramatic improvement from the service im getting now.

Supposed to be Virgin 10mb. They seem to be very temperamental lately.

I'm on Be Unlimited, and tend to get

    Down: 8000 - 9000 kbps
    Up: 1150 - 1200 kbps

But the best part is that the speed is never throttled - I get the full whack even at 8:00pm when I used to struggle to get 512kbps down on Eclipse.

Speedtest.net pings are always high - that's their servers' fault rather than your ISPs. Try a ping to bbc.co.uk and post back the results. In Windows, you'll need to run cmd.exe... Hold the Windows key - which is next to CTRL usually - and then press the R key. In the box that pops up write cmd.exe and press enter. Then type

    Code:
    ping bbc.co.uk
and then copy the result here or screenshot it. In Linux it's

    Code:
    ping -c 4 bbc.co.uk
but I don't know about Macs, sorry.

Depending what Sky package you're on, you're likely on a high interleave depth and delay. Sky defaults to 32 or even 64, and the higher the number the higher your pings as a rule. You'd need to speak to Customer Solutions (tier 3) and ask them to drop your ID to 16, or even 8 if your line can handle it.
