last lian li i looked at was that really tall mess with, of all things, a full size 5.25" drive bay at the top.. nonono ill pay extra and get a slim drive!!

the SG05 was around £60 at one point, no way can they justify that even after VAT going up etc

I still wish DFI hadn't pulled out of the non-OEM motherboard market, they easily made the best small motherboards.
I still think that the LANPARTY MI P55-T36 was the single best ever mini-ITX gaming motherboard.
Although there where issues with it, namely you could push it as high as 3.9ghz with an i5 750 but the PRM circuit would burn out, you could still run it happly at 3.1ghz though.

It seems OK ATM but I need to install windows first before I know of any potential gremlins. I will report back in due course.

You don't have much leeway in which cooler you can use as it is quite near to the PCI-E slot.



However,the stock cooler is around 5CM in height. It is not very noisy although it does have a slightly "grainy" sound.

It seems you can undervolt the CPU and change the multiplier downwards. It seems you can also overclock the GPU. However,how well this will actually work I cannot ascertain ATM.

Bah firefox crashed, I hate it when I lose a half written post.

Funny you should mention that, Firefox just crashed for me on this very page. Then when I restarted it I got a BSOD, something badly wrong with 3.6.16 methinks! It's been crashing all the time lately.

Would you not consider a PicoPSU for this build? It should be fine for what you have in there so far, although a discrete GPU could be a problem.

I find FF4 is crashing frequently too! I wonder if it is an issue with one of the add-ons??

Is and isn't, you still get those coolers with the pentium dual core cpu's, heck even some of the core2duo's now come with the half height coolers.

These are the same ones that came with the 1156 core i3/i5/i7, same as the half height socket 775 stock coolers but slightly wider (the socket area is slightly larger than 775 was)

I can confirm they do a decent job too, just stuffed the following into a CM Elite 100

ran Super pi 32 meg and Furmark @1080 benchmark and max temp on CPU recorded at 71C, not the most demanding but good enough to see if the case was going to make the cpu temp rocket and spin up the Intel HSF - it didn't

only prob is the fan on the CM 100 flex PSU is a bit noisy for my liking , still not too bad for a system with only the intel HSF and Flex PSU doing the cooling

Yeah that looks similar to the stock cooler I got with my C2D E7200. I couldn't hear it above the rest of the system but the E7200 is power frugal.

I got the front power switch connected. I will have to muck around with the front panel as the cabling is short and I need to work out what the pins do on the circuit board.

I want to have it as a general purpose PC and for light gaming. I want to keep my old SD37P2 which has a Q6600 and an HD5850 1GB for heavier gaming.

I was thinking of going down the socket 1156 route but the current bits cost me around the same. A highly overclocked Core i3 540 would probably be faster than the Core i3 2100 but it would run hotter.

If you are still after a better hs/f there is the Akasa AK-959CU and the AK-CC092. Both are about £15 and should provide better cooling than the stock hs/f. They also use relatively quiet PWM fans.

Meh, we've got some of the older ones at work, yes the fan is better than the stock intel one and the heatsink is taller (same height as the original c2d stock heatsink) but for £15 I'd say it's over priced.

We've also got some of the AK-CC055 is some of our slimline cases, they are ok for a dual core and and can be positioned to blow air out of the case.

I have an HD4830 which is too long to fit in the case. Perhaps I should get a PCI-E riser card and use cables to attach it to the side of the case!
