I don't know if the ECM is more effective, but ISTR you have to manually trigger it. The point defence is just left on auto and does it's little best to shoot down any incoming missiles without being asked.
I did try using an ECM, perhaps not for long enough, I ended up just using point defence.
As said, point defence is an active system for shooting down missiles. ECM simply turns seekers into dumb fires.
Both are pointless since unless your shields get dropped missiles/mines/torps currently do virtually no damage to you. Hardly worth worrying about.
I think point defence makes a nice noise
You mean these dumb fire missiles Lowe Skip to 40 sec....python dead in under 10 sec lol
That's an old video. It's for that reason that they were nerfed into oblivion. People were setting up cheap Eagles with three racks worth of dumb fires, blowing up people in Anacondas just as they docked. Even worse the point defence used to go off, with random projectiles hitting the station triggering the automated weapons to blow the trader to bits even if they survived the initial onslaught. These days, nothing to worry about.
ECM simply stops any homing ability and turns the threat into dumbfire, which you then steer away from.
PD fires a string of shots as it tries to shoot down missiles, mines etc, which means it might still miss. PD is also limited to the turrets' firing arcs, so you need more than one or two on larger ships and even some smaller ones.
Chaff spoils auto-aim weapons' lock, but you can still counter both Chaff and ECM easily by untargeting the target and shooting them from point blank range.
I just bought a Python
I suggest kitting it for trading and spending the next nine years running cargo for eight hours a day... that way, when the last currently-planned expansion comes out, you'll finally be able to kit it for combat!!!
Seriously, take care with that beast - Don't fly it when tired or silly mistakes will happen and you'll end up rage-punching your monitor when every insurance claim sets you back at least 4 million credits!!!
lol, some time ago I bought an Anaconda for trading. I stopped playing for a while, and when I recently started playing again I thought "there is just no way I can even get this thing out of the letterbox of the spacestation" so I parked it and took the vulture out instead
Have just parked up my new Federal Assault Ship, and bought a new Hauler which I will fly back to my home system to go pick up the 'conda. I am still a bit nervous about that slot size and the insurance bill The new trading CG could do with a massive hold though, so it is time. Anyone want 500T of mothballs?
You can comfortably get three Anacondas through the letterbox all at the same time.
Kill your speed, not your credit balance...?

Briefly played with both this and the Fed Corvette... apparently I'm NOT a complete retard and there was some sort of bug that sporadically prevented docking/undocking through the letterbox... I hear it's been fixed now, but I lost all my money in insurance costs - If you don't undock in time you get fined for obstructing the docking hatch and then shot to pieces by the station!!
Turreted cannons really don't seem to work for me, either. I had more hits (ie more than zero) when they were Fixed on smaller craft.
Still trying to figure out where the Imp Clipper and Courier fit in - Are they just Imp equivalents of other ships, perhaps?
