Guys if you are trying to play together, hop on my Teamspeak Server
I have been umming and arr'ing about buying this game. I liked the X series and freelancer and space sims in general I guess.
So apart from shooting people and hauling cargo is there a story line or plot?
Jon
There seems to be power struggle stuff going on out there, but so far it seems pretty irrelevant to my day to day exploring & trading.
It is a fun game, though so far I have only gotten money from trading which can grind a bit. A few genuine OMG moments though, often whilst talking to family members and not having my eyes on the screen. Being dead in space because I hadn't watched my power budget properly when upgrading weapons at the outfitters was all my own work though
I think this is the most expensive game I have bought in a while though. I didn't have a HOTAS stick, and I think my graphics card could do with an upgrade.
Not that I know of. However, there was always the rumour in Frontier:Elite II (and confirmed in Elite:First Encounters I think?) of the aliens "Thargoids". I'd imagine that they may play a part some time in the future.
For now, it is trading, combat and exploration (scanning planets). Many have compared the trading part to Euro Truck Simiulator, and not in a bad way. As Yahtzee said, you can put on some podcasts and trade away.
I think they need to add some more mid-level ships. I'm currently in a Type-6 with enough money to buy the Asp, but no reason to: -
- It's not as good for trading as the Type-6 (without removing the shield generator)
- It's not as good at combat as the Viper (larger target, weak shields, higher repair costs)
- It's possibly better than a Cobra for exploration, but again has higher maintenance costs (didn't realise, but there's an integrity heading under repairs that goes down the more you super-cruise)
The next ship to go far would be the Type-7 with double the cargo hold and then probably the Python, but at 55mil it's quite a grind to get there. I'm not sure how the Clipper and Dropship compare for various roles.
They also to fill-out/balance some of the other roles. Trading at the moment is the best cr/hour/risk by quite a long way.
Thanks for the replies, its kinda what I thought it currently was, always best to get opinions from users as the advice is generally more honest.
Will wait and see how it develops I think, I do want it but its a full price game which I haven't bought in a while so justifying that was what I was attempting to do

I haven't heard anyone complaining of lack of storyline, in the same way that I haven't heard people asking for story lines in Minecraft. In both cases though, I have had some real heart-stopping moments so the immersion is there.
There seems plenty to do. Collect ships, go asteroid mining, pirating, bounty hunting, exploring, do some missions, get yourself a naval rank.
I also was undecided for a good while. I was big into Star Citizen to start with, but gave up and switched to ED after playing some of the Alpha on a friend's PC.
I think the big draw for Elite over some other space sims is that you have to think about what you're doing.
You don't have to think so much and factor in every tiny detail of spaceflight physics that it takes an age just to slowly go from A-B. That sort of über-involved stuff is what made Evochron Mercenary rather unexciting and the way Star Citizen seems to be going.
But neither can you just hop off and do stuff like with Freelancer. There is a bit of a learning curve and you still have to watch out for things like mass, gravity, fuel, etc. Playing it like a throwaway arcade will get you killed.
The story so far is mostly just political situations slowly developing, with the seeds of things just starting in occasional locations here and there. Unless you happen to be in those very systems, it's mostly just news reports for now. But as then tensions build, people are starting to see Capital Ships appearing and subtle changes to in-game things.
I daresay more things will happen as and when the new features get implemented.
For now, since this is pretty much the final version, I'm mostly just trying to get good at the basics and slowly gather some credits for when things do start happening in my corner of the galaxy.
I agree with this best way to make credits is trading and if you like a slow easy going pace while half watching tv etc then its good. I'd like to smuggle but there is no incentive ie reward. I don't feel sucked into the story or how I could influence or chose sides. Bounty hunting is fun as is pirating but they need to fill the game out. Its a solid foundation. I play it perfectly well on and xbox controller.
I read about someone exploiting the mechanics where they setup a clipper with rail guns and sniped players undocking when you die you return to the same station to be snipped again.

Finally back in a Viper. Feels like home - though I'm stuck with bloody pulse lasers for a while haha!
What loadout you looking at for the viper? Just got one for pirate missions, nearly had my first PvP kill in it, the git just managed to jump away
Think I need to get the tonnage down, it doesn't feel that manoeuvrable yet.
I'm running a very conservative load out at the moment, I only had about 800k to spend after trading in my FrEagle. It's something along the lines of Class A power management, Class B thrusters and power plant , C Shield FSD and a few other bits. Chaff on one utility point, a fuel scoop replacing the discover scanner. I've just got the two loaned pulse lasers for now, but hopefully once I get some more time in I'll be able to pick up some kinetic, probably cannons, but that said I do like rail guns despite the prohibitive ammo and heat issues.
I'm currently sitting at about 100T in mass - much more than that and the Viper can become a bit of a pig. It's not a turning fighter like the Cobra or Eagle, you need to use your abilities in directional acceleration to make distance and bring your guns to bear. Since the Viper has brilliant convergence you can deliver a lot of heat on target quickly making it great for hit and run stuff.
I'm really tempted to make a stealth viper - black paint, 4x rail guns, chaff etc. Sit in silent running and pick foes off without ever being seen.
I wish I could have ramming spikes! As for T9's, the Space Cow doesn't take prisoners.
Also - I'm rocking the Union flag skin. Why? There's word that a group of French players are going to make a move towards taking over Lave. Suffice to say most Brits are incensed and are making it known that French players in Lave space are going to get a kicking.
Virtual Agincourt in 3300 - love it!!!
