    Re: Elite : Dangerous

    Nice conda!

I went back to the game today after a little break.. and was happily doing a freight mission when the next part asks me for a non-existent resource - I can't press the accept button because it's red, there's no way to decline.. only thing I can do is exit game. Grr.

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

Ok bored again. Need some new goals to aim for. Currently I've got a cobra (<3) which I use for CGs/rare trading/courier missions and a Vulture for combat (which I don't enjoy too much).

Thinking of getting an Asp Explorer but again I always want to do jack of all trades... so I kind of want a explorer/miner that can defend itself :/ That's not quite possible without giving up too much jump range I fear. So is mining in an ASP much fun? If not I'll build more of an explorer and just head off scanning things I guess, though I'm not sure it's profitable enough to help progression much is it?

I made the mistake of looking up how much it takes to get to elite ranking for anything.. no chance. This isn't a game for casuals

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

Some of the missions are distinctly broken - 2.1 is supposed to sort these issues.

The Vulture for me nearly killed off the game - it makes NPC's scraps way too easy and I ceased to enjoy combat. Consider selling it and going for an Imperial Courier. Still nice and agile, but slightly less of a brawler. The Cobra's a brilliant ship - it got me into the whole Robigo smuggling thing which was how I eventually made the last few millions to get the Anaconda. I tried an Asp and had similar success with a lightweight, unarmed but fast build. If interdicted I just made a run for it and 400m/s boost was plenty enough to get away. Stacking up a few missions makes for some serious cash reward, but not without risk if it goes wrong...

The Asp sounds pretty much what you're looking for. Lots of internals, 6x weapon hard points (for a laugh, put all of them as gimballed frag cannons and get interdicted ) and the ability to carry a fair amount of cargo whilst still jumping over 20LY. It also sounds like an old WW2 bomber and has an amazing cockpit view.

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

I switched from the Vulture to the Federal Attack Ship, find it much better. That does require the right Federation navy rank though.

I had been trying to grind my rank up enough to get a Corvette, but that is taking ages. Gah, want to go play Elite now, time to reboot into Windows...

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

I did some exploring in an Asp over Xmas. Spent a day travelling to an area with lots of neutron/white dwarf stars (about 10,000ly out I think), a day scanning and another day coming back. The whole trip netted me around 6mil and bumped me to Ranger. Would only have to do that 20 more times for Elite!

One tip I would give for exploring is the ability to organise the map by star type; this will let you keep an eye on where to refuel and for the more exotic stars to scan.

Also people have rhymes to remember what star classes you can refuel at, but I found an easier way - it's the top 6 star types in the list, with the once nearest the top the best for not over heating

I don't think there is one ship that can do everything, but the closest I have is I think the Python. The jump range doesn't completely suck, it is OK in a fight, you get plenty of modules which in my case means a lot of cargo space, and you can land on medium sized pads which is great for missions.

Basically I am dong missions atm and of my collections of ships this is the one I am using. Well, up until last night when I picked up a "shoot down 66 pirates in this system" mission so I will pop back to my home system and swap to the FAS for this evening.

Were the higher naval ranks always a slow grind?

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

Naval etc. ranks also seem completely unreachable for me - I managed some early progression but reputation seem to have declined over real time rather than play time, so basically it's out of reach unless you have more hours to play (rather than just taking longer).

Python is on the to buy list one day too

I gather it is supposed to take more effort per rank as you rank up. It just feels like the rep per mission is worse, I gather the donation missions used to be easier to find and higher reward. I am getting 1% to 2% on donation missions at Ensign rank. Seems such a long way to Rear Admiral and getting that Corvette.

It looks like for mining you want a really big ship these days so you can deploy lots of collector limpets and have a really big refinary. I have a Federal Dropship configured for mining, but a Type 7 should be OK as long as you don't get too many pirates turning up.

If you get up to Allied with a major faction then whilst it slowly decays in real time, it will never drop below friendly unless you do something to annoy said faction. That way you can keep ranking up so long as you do work for lots of minor factions affiliated with the major power in question.

I found even if I let that drop down to 75% it cranks back up to 100% pretty fast. The problem is naval progression, that never decays but Ensign took long enough to get through. I should hopefully get my promotion mission when I next log in, but I dread to think how slow the next lot of missions will be. Still, I am finding some pretty lucrative ones so at least by the time I am allowed to buy the ship I should be able to afford the 212M for a D rated Corvette (only another 130M to go, gulp!).

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

Yeah, 75% (friendly) to allied doesn't take too long.

Ranking up doesn't have to be that slow, make sure you lean toward the combat missions for more rank gain per mission, or bite down and head to Cubeo/Tun and smash the charity donation missions.

I don't think I'll bother with the Corvette/Cutter personally. Had a go of them during the beta but didn't find anything that good about them, even when A rated. I can't see making even more cash being that important to me, there's no real cash sinks other than rebuy. It's not like you can go buy an outpost or something to make your own.

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

Hah, I'm not at that point just yet - my 'conda is mostly D rated. Already packing a fair punch though, does well at making mincemeat out of my local Compromised Nav Beacon.

You are flying a ship that takes a 163Mcr of 8A power generator and you say there aren't cash sinks

My 'Conda is running a 6A power plant. Not quite as much power as the 8D, but only 20T so helps with the jump range and fairly affordable. But then mine is a trade 'conda. I find in combat I spend half my time in reverse to try and get the target actually in front of me!
