I've been folding away merrily for days, and just so happened to be dropping the vcore to try to reduce the heat when I started to experience these BSOD's after a couple of hours folding (hense my reduced production rate the past couple of days). It could just be a coincidence, but it could be the SMP client. My server hadn't crashed so I was assuming that it was me using too low a vcore...

Anyone else had any bsod's lately?

I'm only using folding on this to test absolute stability, even though the amchine has been on for nearly a week solid. Once I've rebuilt my server, I'll then be able to upgrade the server (there's no room in the case currently) then the SLI rig will be downgraded to just being my working machine.

My room's so warm that the dog keeps breaking in to go for naps as opposed to sitting under a radiator, or in front of the fire! Keeps my home-brew beer ticking over nicely thoough

No BSODs here, i7 920 @ 3.8GHz (181*21 1.24v), up time of 16 days and have gone through 19 WUs (some bigadv) without a single EUE.

    Re: Folding Chit-Chat

Only had one client crash so far which is a vast improvement over the privously client. That said, I haven't been at work today and the points are looking low so I wonder?

I am working overnight tomorrow and all clients will be shut down for a good 17 hours so someone might just stop being caught under Monday.

That said, I think I am on for doubling my points in November. Just need to hit 4 million before the end of the month.

I've set the -bigadv flag yet I haven't got any spectacularly large WUs... is this to be expected?

Yeah, that's normal. I usually receive about 1 bigadv WU every 4 standard SMP WUs, sometimes I get bigadv after bigadv and other times I can go through 10 standard WUs before I get a bigadv.

Also make sure you haven't set the -advmethods flag, that overrides -bigadv and you won't get a bidadv WU that way.

-advmethods removed, 99% complete on the WU, let's see what comes up!

EDIT: not this time Incidentally, what other flags are people running with the smp client?

    Re: Folding Chit-Chat

One more thing, are you folding on that i5 rig in your sig? You can't get bigadv WUs on that I'm afraid, bigadv requires machines with 8 threads or more, e.g. i7 with HT or Dual Quad Xeon/Opteron.

However, there are 'ways' to get bigadv working on machines with less than 8 threads but the guys behind F@H aren't too happy about people doing it, Google for the method at your own will.

Single quad xeon is ok too with HT enabled.

The time limits are the issues with the bigadv units though. I believe the ones I get are 48 hours but worth over 8500 points each.

People have managed to get bigadv units on a phenom II x6 but it's not worth the hasle perhaps - you're probably folding for the wrong reason if you care that much.

    Re: Folding Chit-Chat

Six core AMDs are slightly more tolerated as are quads with HT than plain quads for crunching bigadvs, both don't have 8 'proper' threads (I lack the vocabulary here). The reason for continuing to allow these machines to fold is the people behind F@H don’t know what’s worse; the increased time for returns due to the use of said CPUs or only allowing true 8+ core machines to fold bigadvs which would result in faster project returns but a reduced number of folders.

I think the generally accepted rule is; if a 6 core or HT machine is just managing to complete a bigadv WU within the deadline (4 days?) then the machine is better off crunching normal SMP WUs. I suspect an i5 at 3.2GHz may fall in to this category if not fail to complete within the deadline.

For every WU you do now there's bonus points. For a 500k step unit it's worth 1.8k points rather than about 500.
