I played a fairly epic session of Minecraft with two friends yesterday; we decided we'd build a castle on an island we found.

I got home at 3:30 this morning after arriving at my friend's place at around 6:30 in the evening. Stupidly addictive game, it really eats your time!

I've started another mineshaft next to my tower - it has a fair amount of stuff in it at the bottom, unfortunately a lot of it is lava..

Anyhoo, that's quite enough messing around for one night

I did go a little mad, lol

I noticed one direction I found someone else's mine (the one with the minecart), so I'm starting to head the other way a bit, but I think I might run into Allen's..

I took the liberty of extending the railway a little while I was there - feel free to move/reconfigure bits

It does look very addictive, i think i've watched most of the youtube vids on it, was so drawn, need to give it a go myself

I found my way in from the bottom, just as someone else came in from above... via several creeper explosions I think...

I meant to do that! I hadn't appreciated the drop from the surface to the base of the cave was quite so large though

Creepers seem faster and much more aggressive than I remember them being in 1.7.x

I found another cave system off to the left about half way down the second set of steps, although I guess that could be part of the same cave, just further up?

I also tried to see how far I could tunnel to the right before getting bored in the dark (I ran out of torches..)... a long, long way is the answer - although I think I stopped near another cave as I could hear mobs through the wall in several places..

Yup, found a couple more caves, one of them with a mob spawner and a couple of chests - found the saddle in one, but then I fell into some lava trying to get out so I think all the goodies burned.. (no chest or anything when I went back)

I've made some more track for the rail system - both powered and not, and dropped them into the chest at the start - go nuts

woot I finally have minecraft on my eeepc and I only had to wipe the original linux and install xp (I'd been meaning to do that for a while, this was just the final straw)

EDIT: ok just had a go with my eee, minecraft seriously hammers the poor little atom and the 945 intel chipset IGP
Interestingly it's better on the multiplayer than single player, I think that's because it's getting the map from the server not having to generate it.
Just had a quick play in creative mode, boy lava seems to kill it badly, not static but flowing.

Speaking of which, I've found you can make some very impressing lava springs by placing a lava block at on the top of a tree.
The lava flows across the leaves forming a big hollow pillar, then the leaves burn and the middle slowly fills up, but the outter lava blocks still stay there so you can get a massive amount of flowing lava off one block (And really cause a netbook to struggle )

Pob, have a look at basic 8x8 (there are some 4x4 too) texture packs.

1.8 seems to hammer my PC more than 1.7 ever did but with a lower quality, smoother texture pack, things run beautifully.

I can't remember which one I'm running but will have a look if you're interested.

Umm AFAIK, no there's not, they just "look" 8x8 it's still 16x16
I've not found any mod that allows for it (you need a mod to change the texture size and the mod only allow for bigger textures.)

Are we concentrating our efforts on extending the rail track to the stronghold at the moment?

If so I'll start hunting for more iron and gold ore deposits
