What on earth are you all going on about, this petition is to stop state funding of faith schools not remove religious education entirely.

Read it again:
If you prohibit the teaching of religious 'mythology' (and in all schools according the petition, not just state funded ones) then you cannot educate people about religion.Originally Posted by petition
It is also incorrect when it says:
- I don't think there are any such schools in the UK.Originally Posted by petition

Does the fact that a school is privately funded allow it to teach dogma as science?
(Thanks Evilmunky)

my two pence:
religion might of brought out the worst in some people.... but i think it has brought out the best in far more people. We have an amazing history in this country of caring for others which has been born out of broadly christian morals, i.e. schools for non upper class children, hospitals for the poor, any number of charities.
It might not be fashionaly for you, and i'll probably be shot down for saying it, but religious morals - especially christian ones have done far more good than harm.
How are you intending chooseing / teaching you morals to the kids?
I'm not sure 'survival of the fittest' would often produce much welfare for those who suffer in life... but maybe i am just old fashioned...
No, you read it again.
'Faith schools remove the rights of children to choose their own religious, philosophical and ethical beliefs. They also sanction ethnic segregation and create tension and divisiveness within society. Schools should be places where children are given a free education, not centres for indoctrination. Creationism and other religious myths should not be taught as fact regardless of the funding status of a school. Abolishing faith schools will provide children with more freedom of choice and help to promote a fully multi-cultural, peaceful society.'
Fair enough the title could be more specific, but the general thrust is to remove funding for faith schools not remove RE entirely.

I was a devout Catholic until the age of 18, when my ability to believe finally crumbled under the weight of the internal contradictions presented by the notion of a personified supernatural force. I think this has made me a better atheist as a result.
One of the goals of education should be to allow children to understand the motivations of others. This is why some degree of religious education is essential, not just as a historical or cultural perspective, but to give an understanding of the deep-seated psychological processes underlying faith. Like it or not, the comfort-blanket of religion is an essential coping mechanism for a vast number of people. Not only do children need to understand how this affects the thoughts of others, but in some way I feel it would be wrong to deny it to those whose ego strengths are sufficiently weak that they would derive real benefit from it.
As you can see, I don't buy into the fundamentalist atheism of Richard Dawkins et al., though I can understand why he has adopted his position.
"They also sanction ethnic segregation and create tension and divisiveness within society."
Ironic that I think this petition creates TENSION AND DIVISIVENESS WITHIN HEXUS even when the state funding of faith based school doesn't make people sweat at nights
usxhe190, your posts seem to be getting more and more irrelevant. Its a discussion, we both try to convince each other of the validity of our arguments. These debates should be based on the best intellectual tools we have, logic and reason, not emotional arguments like you seem to keep making. What on earth does how I sleep at night have to do with weather its right to fund faith schools?
