I wonder who has the fantastic job of counting ants into their consignment.

What's the big deal with the Queen Ant? my knowledge in this area is somewhat lacking funnily enough.

    Hey guys,

    Found this:

    http://nomoresocks.newscientist.com/...Antquarium.htm

The people writing the reviews say that it might be illegal to sell queen ants and one also said that the ants would overpopulate if there was a queen in there.

    EDIT:

    found this aswell:

    http://www.antstore.biz/de/shop02/pr...roducts_id=365

I think they come with a queen. And the site looks pretty cool, you can build your own ant enviroment with pipes and stuff. Looks pretty expensive tho.

See above threads - I've gone into this quite a lot!

For those interested: You need a queen to lay eggs - no queen=no eggs=no more ants, they will slowly die and your exciting ant farm will slowly turn into ghost farm...

Flying ants (as I remember) during summer flyabout and find new colonies, these then turn into queens...I think the ants in Fam's farm are hoping a queen will land in there (poor sods), they can then look after her and the eggs/larve etc...

The queen may lay too may eggs - in which case you will just have to take some ants out and put them in the garden to keep numbers down

I really think it's worth getting a queen, if the blue gel in this stuff lasts 4-6 months then u just have to buy a new one like twice a year - total cost £22 - cheap as chips! If you can link a few up even better - they'll just migrate to the other one when it runs out

Still three more days till I can order...

    From the ant suppliers.
Note: We do not ship queen ants; only nonreproductive ants are shipped.

The weather is really picking up now though, there are ants EVERYWHERE in my garden, I'm pretty sure if I dig around enough I'll get a queen, mwahaha!

P.S. Just ordered my own antquarium

Anyone know if its possible to just buy the gel? I've got 2 huge sheets of perspex here and i'm wondering if having a huge ant farm would be cool, could always top up the numbers every few months (and the gel)

I'm not sure you can 'top up' the numbers - they may fight.

I doubt you can get the gel on it's own.....unless NASA do it wholesale, haha!

It would be cool though if you could get top ups, seeing as the ants do eat the blue stuff everyone will run out eventually. Is there water in the gel then or something? how the hell do they survive in it with no actual water and food for 6 months? What the hell is this gel stuff made from?
