Re: Your broadband speed - post here

I ran one today and got this:

I check from time to time and tend see that my download speeds are around the mid 37mbit/s and my upload is usually around low 8mbit/s so usually between 8.01 to 8.24 so happy with the spike at 9.47 for upload, would like to see that higher though.

I've never really seen it much different from this. Downloads tend to be around 4MB/s.

Re: Your broadband speed - post here

There's some legitimate reasoning behind VM's upload speeds though, they're not just strangling it for the fun of it. Upstream and downstream on DOCSIS (cable) operate somewhat independently, so upgrades/investment in one direction doesn't necessarily mean more available bandwidth in the other.

Also, whereas the downsteam data can be multiplexed efficiently by the CMTS, the upstream is a bit more complex with it being a shared medium, a bit like Ethernet with hubs instead of switches, but a fair bit more complex. On a basic level, it uses TDMA (time-sliced) but instead of being purely collision based like Ethernet, modems have to transmit upstream requests in a set time slice, then they're allocated some usable upstream bandwidth time slices. On top of that upstream tends to use lower modulation levels for technical reasons (e.g. SNR).

Essentially meaning given the same amount of spectrum, you'll get less usable bandwidth with upstream than you would with downstream.

The DOCSIS standard does support higher upstream bandwidth (as is used on some other networks), but my point is it doesn't come for free - and for most people at least, most Internet usage is still heavily downstream-weighted, so that has to be taken into account when investing in upgrades to the network.

OTOH, with DSL technologies, you have a direct link back to the DSLAM, so there the above issues don't come into play (although upstream still tends to be less spectrally efficient due to crosstalk etc), and VDSL2 (the current version used by BT) essentially offers 100Mbit symmetrical, line-permitting.

Not that I disagree it would be nice to see some upstream improvement on VM.

Pretty good for mobile broadband. Have to use my phone as a portable hotspot in the evening because Sky throttles us so bad YouTube is unusable.

Re: Your broadband speed - post here

Fast enough for me (only had 1Mbps for a long time before this):

the nice upload speed comes from being on a packet shaped fibre connection - not that I need that sorta upload. When the packets shaping went down a couple of weeks ago I was getting 150Mbps in both directions
