    You mean the Sidewinder?
Sure it is. There are some wicked pilots out there in 'em.
If you have the free Eagle (from pre-ordering) that is a seriously good bit of kit. I waste most Cobra IIIs, Asps, Adders and Vipers in mine. Downed at least one Orca and Python before now, too, although those are a bit of a struggle.

Upgrades depend on what you want to do with it...

    I go Bounty-Hunting
You'll probably want better weapons - Fixed or gimballed, depending on your flight style. Probably want one for shield-busting and one for hull-wrecking (two, if you fly an Eagle), although two hull-busters will likely do a reasonable job on shields still.
You'll want a bigger power supply to handle all the stuff you put on, plus a better power distributor.
Better armour is always a good idea, as is an upgraded shield.

From there, you're looking more toward tools for the trade. An FSD Interdictor works nicely if you're hunting local bounties. Add an FSD Wake Scanner and Kill Warrant Scanner if you're hunting across systems.
Piracy works best with a cargo scanner, as there's no point chasing down an empty Hauler.
Explorers benefit from the more detailed system scanners.

There's more, but that should keep you busy for starters.

I don't think the initial 1000 credits will allow me to do any of that I need to make some credits. Thanks for the advice though.

A few missions and a bit of trading and you can upgrade the Sidewinder and build up to a hauler to make more money quicker.

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

The hauler is a good trading ship as it has good cargo space, by not good for fighting as it only has one weapon Hard point. I bought an adder an that has 3 and decent cargo as well. Good all round ship. Saving for a cobra to go bounty hunting.

I've toyed with the idea of tradding a Hauler for an adder. But with the upgrades as they are. I could well end up not being able to upgrade, and going from a ship with load space for 18 and and a range of 17ly fully loaded to about 6 load space and 10 ly range with no upgrades availabe.
I might have to though, at least the adder can hold it's own in a fight.

I would have liked to have kept the Eagle for doing a few combat missions and having it as a second ship. But as there seemed to be a consencus of opinion on there being a wipe i sold it as early as possible to pay for the hauler.
    Oh well....

Oh, yeah, you'll need more credits than just that, for sure. I've put about 400,000 Cr worth of upgrades on the Eagle.

This will mean getting out there and doing stuff... but that's all part of the game.

The eagle is pretty cheap to buy back. i would save up for a Cobra. Far Better IMO.

One good way to earn easy cash is to scan each system as you travel while trading. it all adds up.

Got enough for a cobra now. Might part exchange my adder get one. 60max cargo of you don't use a shield or discovery scanner. 40 if you keep them.

The good thing is that if you chop and change ships, you don't loose the money you've spent on them. (provided you don't crash that is)

I picked a random destination and flew out to have a look around and without having to do much I was finding new/undiscovered locations. I have collected data for about 5 of these but haven't flown far enough away to sell it yet.

Looking at getting this with my new rig in January. How good does your Internet have to be. Never played an mmo before. Mines very patchy but hopefully get BT infinity soon!

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

I get about 2mb down and it plays fine. Had a proper session of it last night and it plays very well, fantastic game. Had a chat with a friend who also plays and we both agree that it can be picked up and played for 30 mins, or sit on it for a couple of hours. Have just kitted my sidewinder for bounty hunting, with a bit of mission running on the side.
