    Re: Elite : Dangerous

Hey guys I just picked this game up on my Xbox One and so far am really really enjoying it! Thinking about actually getting it on the PC now so I can take advantage of more controls etc.

Still, even on an Xbox controller it's superb fun and great sense of achievement.

Only 128 for 40%? I could have done that in a few evenings! I turned in something like 50 after a short session (basically the trip to Lave). No idea what cut that will end up as didn't get a chance to play yesterday. 500k would be a more reasonable amount for the work put in (in fact, still way too generous). If I hit the 70% and a few million I've no idea what I'll do with the money

If you have a few million, a fully upgraded Cobra is the way to go!

I don't want to race to the top too quickly I like to notice and savour each improvement

But still, would be nice to spec out a 'value for money' cobra with everything I want, and have some capital for future upgrades and/or damage money

70% was 5M credits. Not enough for an Asp but would buy you a Cobra or Type 6 outright!

I think the 10Mcr for 15% was only a few hundred reports, but I only had a few short evenings to put into this so I wasn't ever going to get there. That and I was exploring out in the middle of nowhere so fully scanning systems that had never been scanned before which slows things down a lot.

1M total reports submitted to complete the CG by 5000 people, so the average was only 200 per person. Some people just happen to have been exploring for weeks/months and took the opportunity to hand in thousands of reports!

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

Finally had another crack at this last night. Sadly my Saitek Evo joystick refuses to show the calibrate option in Windows 8.1 (drivers added, long internet searches unhelpful) so I was on keyboard and mouse. Wasn't too bad but combat was harder than it should be.

I'd watched a nice getting started video which perked my interest again - got through the first few combat training missions. Might skip the difficult combat missions for the moment and do the docking and travel ones, then try solo again. No harm in blowing up a few sidewinders and starting again apparently so I'll have a bit of fun and see where I go from there.

Fingers crossed.. Given it's all server based, is there a way to log in to a website to check your stats?

I'm no-where near being able to take on the advanced combat tutorials at the moment! Doesn't stop me enjoying the game in safer territories at the moment instead

Don't know a way of checking stats online, I think Frontier are keen to keep in game data staying in game.

I struggled with the combat tutorials, finally being able to afford some decent weapons on the Asp switched me from avoiding combat to going looking for it. With hindsight, I could have done that sooner.

Just the A class thrusters on an Anaconda cost 52M credits. At 162M I am a long way off A rated power plant. No danger of racing to the top with just 0.5M or 5M I'm afraid, but it should make for some enjoyable upgrades.

With 5M I would be tempted to get a type 6 for trading and a Viper for venting at pirates at the end of a frustrating day.

Hmm, certainly better for progression in the longer run, but it's not especially what CMDR kalniel would be interested in. Will have a think. What are the recommended upgrade priorities for a type 6?

    With 5M in the bank?

    http://www.edshipyard.com/#/L=70W,5Q...720727Q403w2UI

That gives you 100T hold space, 20ly jump distance, enough shields for if you bump it on landing and leaves some money over to fill the hold and still cover the insurance. Thrusters and weapons aren't worth it, you can't make a barge handle well let alone fight. At some point A rated shields and then thrusters to aid running away if you get interdicted.

Find a run that does 1000cr per tonne, that's 100Kcr per trip.

Really worth the 1.6M for the advanced scanner?

First thing to downgrade if tight on cash, but all my ships have one. Fly into a sector, scan it, you see everything (and get to sell the scan data). It takes a while to make the money back from scan data sales, but if you want somewhere to dock and the nearest station is 1500ls away from the start point star then the basic scanner won't have seen it.

Edit to add: OTOH, adding one to a Viper adds 50% to the cost, which doesn't seem worth it

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

Hmm so worth sticking on a ship I'll use for a while maybe? Tempted to add it to the cobra builds in that case.

Question about shields - what's the point in getting a shield with higher class if I already have a max mass below the optimal mass? Does regen rate still improve as ship mass decreases beneath optimal?

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

A bigger shield can absorb more energy before it goes pop. I think it was on an Adder I sold the 3E shield it came with an fitted a 2A shield in a smaller internal bay. That gave me running away/bad landing bump protection and freed up the size 3 bay for a larger cargo rack.

A fighting ship I would just get the biggest A rated shield I can fit. And boosters. And hull reinforcement

Times like last night where I got jumped by a wing of 4 players I used the lot and just scraped home!

    yikes..

Right now I'm getting mass limited in my cobra builds - my problem is I want everything so I'm struggling to keep below the optimal mass of the shield generator, which doesn't go up with class.

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

Shield strength works on a modifier:

If the shield optimal mass value is MORE than your ship mass, you get a multiplier bonus. That's why smaller ships comparable to the shields they can fit have really strong shields.

    Comapre this:

Imperial Clipper (400T, 7A Shields Gen, which costs 51 million!) = 306MJ shield
    http://coriolis.io/outfit/imperial_c...8aQ==.Aw18aQ==

Vulture (230T, 5A Shield Genm which costs 5 million) = 387MJ shield (also has the benefit of recharging faster as it's a smaller class)
    http://coriolis.io/outfit/vulture/04...9kA==.Aw19kA==

You also have to factor in how many shield boosters a ship can fit, ( and how many it can effectively power, as boosters are power hungry, therefore limited by the size of the power plant) and how big the ship physically is (how hard it is for other ships to land shots on target).

Vulture is small(ish), comparatively light, reasonably fast, very manoeuvrable which makes it a superb bounty hunting ship.

Imperial Clipper is heavy (same weight as Anaconda, so less effective shields), very fast, more sluggish, but has plenty of space for shield boosters and a large power plant to enable them. However it's got a large foot print, so it's ease of ability to hit and comparatively weak shields are it's downfall, along with limited manoeuvring. It also has weapon points on the ends of it's wings which isn't good for certain weapons (have to stick to gimballed or turreted weapons)
