Yep, got a grade 4 as a trial roll and had planned to try grade 5 but the grade 4 was so good I didn't feel I needed to (I was going to come back to reroll grade 5 at some point but forgot ).

It got me to nearly 40lyr jumps in bubble configuration with fuel but no cargo. With a few more mods onboard like clean drives, lightweight mounts (not great rolls) and switching to my slightly armed explorer build I have a theoretical max of something like 44, but that's down to 36 with fuel and full cargo.

Also picked up low grade mods for distributor (engine focused), power plant (low emissions) and various resistance shield boosters. Meant to pick up a shield generator one but ran out of time and I wasn't sure I wanted the trade offs in strength that reducing the mass would likely give me. End result isn't perfect, but I've got a very cool running ship with good jump range and speed, just about right for an explorer

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

Sounds a bit more reasonable than when I went out! I had 17ly on my Python (I haven't paid for the longer jump range DLC), which was about 22 hours of flight. After dropping off my cargo I've got 26ly but have gone to the core. I'm not heading home, but I've got another 23ly left to go, it's going to take a looong time.

I expect you can carry a bit more than the Asp though

Not a fan of what the patches/expansion has done to the python though - I was looking forward to that being my next ship.

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

Yeah, the Python was my dream ship, but even by the time I got to it it was a bit limp. Still, there isn't much of an alternative all-rounder out there. It's the biggest medium-pad ship and can carry a fair amount of fire power. Unless you specialise you don't have many other options.

And for comparison a bit further along...

Made it to Jacques, dumped a paltry 64T, but also over 1000 systems worth of exploration data. It's not as profitable as the CG in the bubble though sadly Up to Pioneer rank at least. Next step (some way away..) Elite...

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

kalniel if you don't fancy making the trip back you can do the following:

    1) Dock at the station
    2) Buy a sidewinder (buy and store ASP)
    3) Auto-destruct
    4) Choose free side winder option at respawn menu

You'll still have all your money, but your ASP will be stuck out there until 2.2 is released....you're then free to buy another ship in the bubble and continue playing with a second ship of your choice

Yeah I heard of that 'trick' - not a huge fan! I'm OK out here - have a nice neutron field to play in at the moment then will head back when I'm bored and see how close to Elite that gets me. Might swing by Sag A too before they add in more dangerous black hole/nuetron star effects!

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

I'm on my way back from Sag A* after doing a similar thing, went via the Great Annihilator too, that's well worth a trip, whilst it's not as big as Sag, you can get closer and it makes for a far more impressive black hole.

I'm about 18,000ly left to get back - it's going to take a while...

I'm not prepared to "cheat" with a suicide-sundie from Jacques. Taking my Python back slowly and catching up on some TV in the process.

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

So I took a small jaunt out to Pleiades Sector AB-W B2-4 last night. With my newly modded (grade 5) FSD, my combat ready Anaconda made it there in just 14 jumps, not bad for just over 400ly. When I got there it was night time at the crash coordinates, and thick mist meant it was difficult to see from anything from a couple of thousand meters up. I took it lower and then I caught sight in the corner of my searchlight.

Given it was night time and closer examination was tricky, I camped out overnight and waited for dawn to come around. You start to get a sense of how big this thing is.

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

I'm really pleased with her. Since I tend to play as a single ship owner, apart from the outpost jobs I'm able to pretty much to turn my hand to anything without having to refit too much. I've got level 2 7A dirty drives so it's not that big of a pig to throw around, but top speed is pretty poor at around 315m/s on boost. Really looking forward to Ship Launched Fighters since I'll have the best of both worlds then and be able to get my agility fix without having to mess about with buying new ships.

The only upgrade I really want is a class 8A power plant, but that comes in in at something silly like 162m credits, more than the bloody ship. I'm rocking a 7A at the moment, but I'm considering modding it to squeeze a little more juice out - currently I can't run anything in the two small hard points. Ideally I want to chuck some seeker missiles or mines in those, and leave everything else as multi cannons.

With regards to the alien ship, I see no way for it to have weaponry etc. I'm wondering if it's melee only using those claws and so it literally tears your ship apart. Would certainly explain why the crashed ships that have been found are missing cockpits etc. Nasty thought. :/

I'm really pleased with her. Since I tend to play as a single ship owner
Yeah, I like my multi-role ships too. Still eyeing up a python which I should be able to afford just about once I'm back. Might be able to spec a bit of mining too if it's still worth it without going 100% dedicated mining build.

With regards to the alien ship, I see no way for it to have weaponry etc. I'm wondering if it's melee only using those claws and so it literally tears your ship apart. Would certainly explain why the crashed ships that have been found are missing cockpits etc. Nasty thought. :/
Or... *gasp* it was a scout/explorer and came in peace

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

I'd advise against the Python unless you have good Engineers able to assist. I honestly find that the biggest complainers on the Frontier forums about the AI being overpowered are Python pilots. Don't get me wrong, it's a good multirole, armed trader. It isn't however the gunship powerhouse that it once was, and so you may find it a little underwhelming. It's got average base shielding, and isn't that quick so can sometimes struggle to escape.

I went for the Clipper instead. Yes it's another large pad ship and it doesn't carry quite so much or pack as much of a punch. But, my word it's quick. You don't need big shields if you're just doing a Brave Sir Robin, you'll be out of range in the blink of an eye.
