Only because of the horrific banding

I reckon Robert's trying to convince himself he needs a 5D

I assume he was testing the high iso capabilities.

If people think that is 'horrific' noise for ISO 12800 then frankly they expecting waaaaaaaaaay too much from an aps-c camera with a high MP count. Even the 7D is noisey at 12800. Very few other aps-c cameras even go that high and all of them are noisey.

For the ISO, which lets be honest in normal use will probably be used for concerts etc its fine

No, I can tell it's pretty good for what it is.. but looking at the exif, he didn't have to push the iso that high.

    Re: Photo-a-day

Did my first HDR today on a bunch of flowers. Quite pleased with it..
Lee edited it together for me though, I just took the photos.

    Here's the original 3 photos. (-1, 0, +1)

And here's the end product .

    Nice and vibrant.

    Any tips would be appreciated

    Re: Photo-a-day

Oh dear, there's more detail in the first non-hdr photo..
I think you'll need to redo that, there's no black detail and the highlights are.. banding.

    Re: Photo-a-day

It's just been done the wrong way around

In HDR you take the light areas from the darkest exposure, and the dark areas from the lightest exposure. That photo has the opposite, which is doing the same thing as just increasing contrast. Which is fine, but it's better to do that with contrast/level tools than multiple exposures.

HDR reduces contrast, and there's not much point in your photo because you've already captured pretty much all of the information.

Done the right way around it looks like this:

With a tweak to levels, sharpness and saturation it looks like this:

And reveals that you're probably a bit too close to the flower - the one in the background is slightly sharper.

I don't think I was too close, I just think I need a wider aperture (I think that's what I need). I was focused perfectly on the centre flower, it's just the flower's petals behind it are the same distance away as the centre of the focus one.

    If that even makes sense

Your HDR one looks ace compared to mine! I'm gonna have to give all of this HDR malarky a go myself.. Lee obviously isn't cut out for it .

You mean smaller aperture (higher F number) - which will increase the depth of field (depth in focus).

We need a rhyme or something to remember the aperture and stuff.

Out yesterday. Tried to do a minimum of changes to the final pic. Looking down on Glenridding in the late afternoon.

Filters arrived and just in the process of working them out.

Your photos are genuinely amazing! Some absolutely gorgeous landscapes.
Only about 30 miles from my house .

I might have a drive out to the lake district today if I get my arse into gear. Or maybe just visit Talkin Tarn, that place isn't too far and it's gorgeous there .

Talkin Tarns beautiful mate. Some great views over it if you pick your spot. Lakes aren't too far either - out to Bothel and turn left or down to Penrith and turn right

I'd take the Penrith route and call in at my Grandma's for 15 minutes for a piece of Mars bar cake and a cup of tea .

Had my camera since Tuesday and not really been anywhere with it yet. Weather's gorgeous today though.

Do you use a tripod for your pictures?

A lot of them I do - didn't with that one as it was too steep to set up. Depends on speed and various other conditions.
