focus distance is measure from the sensor.. there should be a mark on your camera body indicating where that is

I know, and there is, but I don't usually shoot with a ruler from the sensor mark to the subject (unfortunately it's not recorded in exif either, unlike for my compact).

I forgot to mention on this photo, very nice use of a strobe here, other than the reflection in the sunglasses it is very hard to notice
