I don't have particularly steady hands so IS helps at longer focal lengths for handheld shots such as the blue tit at 200mm. I'm not one for lugging the tripod around so anything that helps to stop my shots looking like a gorilla high on caffeine took them is a win for me.

Really ? Maybe my monitor has a different setting, but to my (slightly short sighted) eye, I cant see any.

I'll redo it and post the two together, see what difference it makes. Compression was down to 70% BTW.

I have to agree - saw the same thing with the earlier macros as well - it's just exaggerating blur by smoothing as part of the compression and creating artefacts at edges.

What is your monitor?

i'd rather not be loading 600Kb files every time i look at a post..
those 2 images above look like extreme crops with over the top noise reduction to me.. (killing details)

There shouldn't be noise reduction going on at ISO 400 on a D90 surely?

The no compression is a lot better, especially the edges, and 600k is not too big IMHO, however you could probably go to 90-95% compression for some reduction in size without creating artefacts.

But there is still some blurring and artefacts at edges in the no compression pic - look at the edge of the buttercup where it meets the green. Something in the process is causing this as it looks to be more than just the AA filter. How are you resizing the images?

Hmmmm, OK, theres no noise reduction or sharpening in software, maybe its the sharpening in camera thats doing it. Using Redstone resizer to resize, max long side to 1024pix.

Yea i will mate. not intensional. was a random shot just to see if i can handhold a shot in dark conditions. Dont normaly take shots inside shops as i know in most cases your not allowed

Late afternoon.

Not sure if you're aware, but you should (at least for birds, not sure about other things) try to avoid taking them at 4ish as they often come out flat with low contrast due to the light at that time of day. I guess that's why your BT doesn't "pop". Although your edit does look a lot better, if not slightly over sharpened to my eyes. Nice one regardless though!

Got some new pics. Order of the day: Urban Candid Shots!! i went crazy and filled a 4gb CF card in an hour session!

Uploaded and touched up some of these in lightroom. first time using that app.

I need to upload some more though but had a quick browse and picked these so far:









I had to go up close and personal for many of these shots! Tamron 17-50mm is such an awsome and sensational lens!

Your subject work is getting more ballsy Josh but the colour processing on those shots is all kinds of wrong, ease off the pedal with Lightroom. Second and third shots are almost psychadelic, last shot is cold.

You do need balls though to get pics like that on a wide angle lens! no other way of doing it besides getting your canon 70-200mm lens and shooting from a distance but i heard all the great street photographers go up close and personal!

Again, cheers for the advice. will tone down the lightroom effects!
