Just lost a WU at 80 or 90-something %, some instability error. Haven't had these in a while. All is well now, go figure

My numbers will be a bit lower this month, absolutely skint after Xmas so we're going a bit easier on the household bills where we can, including electricity.

    Re: Folding Chit-Chat

Think we're all in that position!

Just for a laugh today I decided to download the GPU client and try it out on my HTPC (HD4200 IGP). I take back any negative remarks I may have made about my old 8400GS!! ATI really need to get folding performance sorted: either by re-engineering the GPU or helping out with the coding...

Just my main rig going full time, I haven't been in my uni flat for a while now and it's been running 24/7 uninterrupted. That said, it looks like the WUs for the GPU are changing and looking at my folding over the last day or so I reckon they don't like my overclock at all. Anyway, I'm dropping by my flat tomorrow afternoon so I can see what's happenning then.

    Re: Folding Chit-Chat

    Bit of an update:
for some reason my computer had been switched off and upon turning it back on the internet was disconnected (now reconnected). I've reset the ultraVNC thing so I can now log back onto my PC from this laptop and it seems it's the CPU client having the biggest problems with cores crashing and whatnot. So I'll let that run for a bit and try and diagnose what's going wrong. GPU seems fine, but I've notched the overclock down to 800MHz on the core to maximise stability.

Yay, up to #152, 1stRaven watch out, if you stop folding & I keep going I'll catch you up in about 5years

I'm running on the GPU client but not sure if its the 'new' GPU3 one? 6.30r2 any use?
If not GPU3 then is it any faster?
Can/should I try the SMP client as well (AMD X3 435 @ 3.3Ghz) will they run at the same time?

    Re: Folding Chit-Chat

Yup, AMD/GPU run well simultaneously as it's all processed on die; a core 2 has to go through the fsb which slows it down a lot. That CPU will net about 4.5kppd when you start getting bonus points. Worht doing IMO. Have you tried an unlock? Incidentally I'd run the GPU2 client if you have a GTX260.

    Re: Folding Chit-Chat

You learn something new everyday don't you nibbler
Just to clarify, I believe that Core2 Duo's do all communication on the die which is much faster, but Core2 Quads are simply 2 C2D dies on the same package, and for cores 1 or 2 to communicate with cores 3 or 4 it has to go through the fsb, which isn't optimal as my fsb runs at about 500mhz, where as the cores are clocked at 3.4ghz

    Re: Folding Chit-Chat

I've just thought; at some point when I bring my PC home I'm no longer going to have free electricity, which means I may have to scale down my operations. How much do you reckon it costs to run my current set up (see under username) on full load? Will it represent a significant increase to the electricity bills of one person living in a flat (i.e. will my aunt notice?)

She most definitely will notice If your PC runs 24/7 and uses around 300 watts of electricity (I assume you run both SMP and GPU clients?), over a day that's 7.2kWh, over the course of a month - 216kWh. Multiply that by the cost of your kWh (not from Britain, don't know ), and you get your number.

Current price is about 12p per kWh

Hmmmm, I think I may suddenly start taking a keen interest in PPD/Watt efficiency from now on! Or just go 12/7. I miss infinite amounts of free electricity :/

    Re: Folding Chit-Chat

Must admit that this has been a bit of a wakeup call for me.

    A GTX 295 @ 100% and a core i7 980 @ 3.5 Ghz must be using about 500 watts.

Probably. Why do you think I keep saying I won't run Kali folding 24/7 once she's finished A Q6600 and 2x 8800GTXs, all overclocked under water, is going to be one massive power hog (I reckon pushing 600W). She hits 370W under full load as it is, with just the one 8800GTX and everything at stock...
