    Re: Folding Chit-Chat

Hey guys, long time no see
When I get back from holiday, I'm selling up this computer in its entirety and getting a laptop. When I'm at uni I'll have free electricity (or at least it won't make a difference how much I use). So how do you guys think an i7 2630qm and a GT 555M will do? Good for 10kppd?
edit: seems that a gt 555m is good for 6kppd. The cpu will manage anywhere between 5 and 10. heat and noise will be the issue if I fold them in tandem though.

I reckon your swimmers will be wearing sunblock..... if you have any left after having that fold on your lap. I don;t recommend a laptop folding at all.

If I were to hazard a guess I'd say the 555M would knock out about 6k... Probably wrong, but certainly not to be sniffed at....

Ah you in my position then? Where you headed and to do what?
More importantly, what laptop are you looking at getting? I think I'm getting a dell xps 17 since on ebay they sell returned units for like £500 off rrp ie 1080p 17.3" laptops with 3d, 2630qm and a gt555m for about £850.

    Re: Folding Chit-Chat

I'm aiming to stay number 1 if possible. Just coming up with a sneaky plan to get the power cut off to Tatty's home as he gets close to me.....

In all honestly, I am trying to find a method that I can get my folding back up and running. We are looking to upgrade a lot of the servers at work to virtual servers so wondering if I can use the old equipment elsewhere ( ) in the building....

I'm flattered that you're concerned enough to mention me, but I think you're safe for at least 7 months.

I won a Sabertooth P67 board (non B3 Stepping - so waiting for a replacement) so I'm going to get another machine up and folding soon, possibly this weekend, plus I have a media centre pc (Q6600 itx + 8800GTX all under water) build which I'm going to start imminently, so I'm hoping that this winter we have no heating bill, just a folding bill.

I'm planning on being single-handedly responsible for this global warming phenomenon.... I'm just looking for sponsorship by someone.... BNF or Powergen would be good....

    Re: Folding Chit-Chat

I'm afraid we've just had an office move and the new one doesn't have air-con, and does have heat-capturing windows, so in the interest of office comfort I'm not currently folding on my test server.

Quick question though: am I right that I could potentially just copy my entire F@H folder to another machine, delete the work folder, and fire it up and I'll be folding on the new machine without having to mess around remembering my passcode and everything? I only use the console smp client so I'm pretty sure that should work?

If so, I've got a couple of low-clock 8-thread Xeon's that could temporarily be donated to the cause

    That's a media centre?

From memory, the 8800GTX is good for about 5-6k ppd, and a Q6600 on 3 threads is good for about 3.5k. So you should get between 8k and 10k out of that lot (plus whatever boost you get from overclocking under water, of course ). Just be aware that it's going to pull somewhere over 300W when it's folding, so probably > £1 a day in extra leccy.

I just copied the .exe and client.cfg files for each new client I ran. This brings across all the settings including passcodes etc.

Right, off to give that a go

EDIT: thunk - presumably I need to set this up to run as a service if I don't want to leave myself logged on to the server? And you can't set programs to run as a service? *ponder*...

    Re: Folding Chit-Chat

I thought that you needed the console version of the client in order to run it as a service.... Not entirely sure tbh.

Regarding the media centre, yes it is. I just happen to have a bit of old kit sitting around, so rather than going for the newer lower power edit, I'll re-use my old kit. The screen (720P projector) is only on intermittently while we watch a film, and presently I'm using my Rock CTX extreme laptop, which is a complete waste of resource, plus it can't fold without making too much noise. It's going to be under water in an old shuttle case if I can get all the bits to fit in.

Thanks for the heads up on the points.... I would use my GTX 285 in there but it's a Gainward GS model, and non reference, and hence I can't find a waterblock to fit. Besides, the 8800GTX is good enough, and has the right ports to connect....

I'd only be interested in GPU folding on a box like that, probably at 50% load so that it can just be left on even when watching a film....

    Re: Folding Chit-Chat

For now I've left myself logged in with the session running; I'll look into setting up a service another time. Currently taking ~ 6m 10s per frame on a P6068: not sure if that's good or not I'll have to wait and see what points I get from the unit. Really can't be bothered to go through the hassle of trying to install FAHMON or some other such program on Web Server 2k8 R2 - it's was enough of a nightmare just getting the damn things accepting RDP connections...

UPDATE: Looks like it'll take between 10 and 11 hours for a 500K, which is a couple of hours faster than my Opteron. Not bad for a 45W CPU

    Which CPU is it?
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

    Intel Xeon L3426

Quad core 8 thread, Lynnfield-based, 1.86GHz core frequency with a max Turbo of 3.2GHz, and a 45W TDP. Pretty much ideal for a dedicated web server, IMNSHO

EDIT: Insight sell them from ~ £250, and do an Intel Q57-based desktop board that's compatible for another £100 if anyone fancies a particularly funky low power computer - add a Radeon 68x0 and you'd have a potent but power-efficient gaming system...

    Re: Folding Chit-Chat

Very nice. I have to ask though, why such a high TurboBoost? I was under the impression there was ~5 speed bins extra at most?
