    Re: Folding Chit-Chat

Dunno - it seems like the lower the TDP and base frequency, the higher they can get away with ramping the max Turbo frequency. It's counter-intuitive really, but there must be a technical reason for it...

Regarding the media centre, yes it is. I just happen to have a bit of old kit sitting around, so rather than going for the newer lower power edit, I'll re-use my old kit. The screen (720P projector) is only on intermittently while we watch a film, and presently I'm using my Rock CTX extreme laptop, which is a complete waste of resource, plus it can't fold without making too much noise. It's going to be under water in an old shuttle case if I can get all the bits to fit in.

Thanks for the heads up on the points.... I would use my GTX 285 in there but it's a Gainward GS model, and non reference, and hence I can't find a waterblock to fit. Besides, the 8800GTX is good enough, and has the right ports to connect....

I'd only be interested in GPU folding on a box like that, probably at 50% load so that it can just be left on even when watching a film....
My GT240 has no problems with running 1080 content whilst folding at 100% I think the purevideo part of the CPU isn't using the shaders, as I see no drop in ppd whilst watching videos, really need to start folding on that machine again tbh

More importantly, what laptop are you looking at getting? I think I'm getting a dell xps 17 since on ebay they sell returned units for like £500 off rrp ie 1080p 17.3" laptops with 3d, 2630qm and a gt555m for about £850.
St John's College Cambridge, to do computer science I haven't thought about what specific laptop to get at the minute, I briefly considered taking my desktop down but figured it would be too distracting, my current plan is to not have a laptop and use the department's computers for the Michaelmas term while deciding if I even need a laptop

    Re: Folding Chit-Chat

You'll find 24hr uni labs + 24hr college labs at Cambridge tend to negate any requirement for your own computer (or they did 17 years ago, at any rate ). Be sure to grab a sausage and chips from the van in the market square on your way back to college after a late night in the Mond Room!

You'll (hopefully) know exactly what I'm talking about by mid-October Have fun guys...

Me neither. Brunel FTW! Or FTD (For the Degree) to be precise.... Neither Oxford nor cambridge would have me, and besides, in 1992 both were rated below Brunel and Kings College for Mechanical Engineering.

I don't think that they would have had me anyway....

    Re: Folding Chit-Chat

How odd, I swear I replied to your previous post last night - just to say that Oxbridge are notorious for being very subject specific in what is worth doing there. e.g. if you want to do sciences you go to Cambridge, if you want to do Maths you go to Oxford: and even the admissions tutors from the respective unis will tell you that! For things that are more practical or relatively modern (and yes, I do count Mech Eng as being "relatively" modern in that sense ), the chances are that other unis will be better.

Looks like my server got through one WU at about the same PPD as my 2.5GHz Opteron, before Remote Desktops kicked me off Will have to investigate running as a service when I have some spare time. In the mean time, I'll just have to hope the reddDragon doesn't kick up their production any more, or I might be in danger of being overtaken

OK, fahwiki was very useful in enabling it to run as a service - just start the client with the -configonly flag, tell it to install as a service, then go into services and start it Now chewing away on all 8 threads quite happily - I'll keep an eye on my PPD for the next few days to see how it gets along

Jim if you class mech eng as modern, then I would hate to know what you consider old lol

    Re: Folding Chit-Chat

Engineering modern.... Best not let that wippersnapper Newton, That slip of a kid Benoulli, or any of those other fellas refering to their stuff as Newfangled or anything like that! I think I can safely say that Mech Eng is certainly one of the oldest engineering disciplines, but I would concede that it's a mere upstart of a subject compared to pure Maths or Physics. There again..... What isn't!

As for the Service bit, I gave you a thanks becasue I didn't realise it was so blimmin easy to do! Will get mine set up similarly as soon as I receive my replacement board.... The P67 Sabertooth Board I won from an Overclocking competition (5.28Ghz on Air!!! )is only a revision B2 board, and so will degrade with time.

As the machine is not just my folding server, it's also a media centre server I'll need all the available ports in conjunction with the 8 port 2680SGL RocketRaid that I bought... 8 Sata on the card, plus 4 on the board, plus 4 SATA 3 slots should keep me going for a fair while... Shame I've filled 6 of them already!

I've been consolidating lately so will be putting the bits on the forums soon Goodbye 980X, goodbye P6T Hello 2600K!

Reason? Board was free, and my leccy bill will be lower based on the CPU being 95W vs 130W at stock. Wehn overclocked, I estimate that the CPU is using around 200W, which is makign my room unbearably hot.

You need adminstrator privs to set up a service, so run a command prompt as Adminstrator and start the exe from that. When you get to "change advanced options" choose yes. And I think you need to add the -smp flag when it asks for any other command line switches. Otherwise it's very straightforward Just make sure you don't accidentally run folding from the same folder, 'cause that'll really mess up your work units...

It was back in the 90s - certainly in terms of Pure Maths (which should be the bit you're bothered about if you're going to Oxbridge to do Maths!). That might have changed though - don't forget I'm old

Cambridge is definitely more prestigious for maths.

What are you on about, evolution and behaviour is the best part of the course. Palaeoanthropology is pretty much the most interesting thing in Biology
