so P5K Deluxe Wifi is better than a rollercoaster ride

Anandtech maybe should have called it battle of the heatpipes rather than

I'm trying not to get excited about it, in case it ends in failure like the rest of the crap boards from the last year (barring the p5b)

I do like this chipset though, and they are right in what they say about it being mature already.

For anybody building a serious rig after 22nd July I think P5K + Q6600 + DDR2 definately hits the sweetspot. The 95W Q6600 G0 variant should be out by then which can only help matters.

I wonder what will emerge as the best bang for the buck DDR2 memory for this board? Anandtech put up a very interesting DDR3 vs. DDR2 article just recently in the Memory section of their site and are certainly in love with the P5K. Here's a snippet from their conclusion:

"As stated in the review, almost every Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad we tried in the P35 ASUS P5K and P5K3 ran at 1333 FSB at the default multiplier and default voltage. The only processors that required any voltage increase were the top line Core 2 Extreme processors. This free 25% overclock, which still allows everything else in the system to run at default values, is exciting. It is so exciting we have to wonder how long Intel will allow this in the marketplace."
Apparently, "Do whatever you like" should NOT be considered authorisation to build my uber rig!

Considering the wealth of good reviews and user experiences, I just had to go for this board when I found for just a smidgeon over £100. In fact, I just ordered it for the same price the P5B Dlx go for in the shops - inc. shipping. Guess the gods don't hate me after all. :-) If I'm also blessed with a nice, fat wage packet next month, the P5K/Q6600/8GB DDR2 triumvirate will be a reality. Roll on mid-June please!!

Ooops, so I did. Well, I guess since it's in the EU it might be of some use. I'm sure they'll ship 'em out.

Danish store and bugger me if it isn't around £10 cheaper now than yesterday. Blimey.

By the way Clunk - since I'm just aiming for a "comfy" 3GHz on the Q6600 (fingers crossed) rather than pushing everything to the max, is there any point in spending my not-so-hard-earned dosh on extra cooling? MosFETs, SB and such I mean?

Personally, I wouldnt recommend a quad core with a view to serious overclocking with anything less than watercooling, especially with summer on the way.

Surely postage can't be that bad? I'm in Norway, i.e. outside the EU and it wasn't much. About a tenner I think.

Summer, schlummer. This is Norway Clunk. Polar bears in the streets and all that (or so the Americans tell me). If it gets hot, it'll last two days or so.

I didnt realise you werent in the UK, it makes more sense now

Still, stock temps are much higher than c2d, so you will need some awesome air cooling, even for just a couple of extra notches of vcore.

Here's hoping it'll do 3GHz @ stock then! I rather not have to shell out for a beefy Thermalright too, if it's at all avoidable. Then again, I've no doubt had my measure of luck for -07.

And here comes the commando version

They seem to have taken on board a few of the niggles about the original commando, like the LED Poster thing is now on a wire, although I'm not convinced about those little waterblock things!

just wondering exactly which models of this motherboard exist, now that i have decided to go for it.

    i have seen
p5k vanilla (no heatpipes, ICH9, etc)
p5k wifi deluxe (heatpipes, ICH9R, more stuff)
    p5k-e -?????

its really crap that there is no stock at scan, a shame really. not too sure i trust most of the other retailers (who are a lot more expensive, upto £20-30 more).
