A bit of change from the white and snow.

First attempt at studio lighting, taken in the world's smallest lounge. Damn you need room to get the lighting right! And after the first shot, I realised I need to get a lot of modifiers, and get some hairlights

    Not enough snow, says I
In early January my wife & I took my parents up to Jukkasjärvi in northern Sweden - specifically to the famed Ice Hotel... on our snowmobile evening trip it dropped to 30 below!

My amateur skill shows in my inability to take decent shots of ice & snow - use a flash and forget it, the detail is blown - but don't use a flash and you get greyish-blue tones.
I think I have a lot to learn about white balance (as well as framing & post-production!).

ta, its my rude fascination when looking at a pic, to look at the size/shutter.

    Re: Photo-a-day

Generally for snow I dial in some positive exposure composition - usually about 1 stop -then then check the resulting photo on the LCD screen and work from there - I always shoot raw and so don't really care about White balance, although when I check the back LCD screen for snow shots I know that my a700 usually produces a cooler image than it should so I always remember to take that into account

Had a dig around for a few old pictures and had a replay at the editing..
found this one, one of the first serious model shoots ive ever done, helped out by a friend did a shoot in birmingham and was fairly pleased with the shots i got, this is my favorite of the bunch..

That's a great image - the lighting and texture of the models clothes looks great IMO

Thanks Syd. She's a good friend and I knew she wanted some photos done so offered to take some if she wouldn't mind being my gunnea pig. Learnt a lot and will try something elaborate next time. She insists on paying me, but she's patient and rather pleasing to the eye so I'm just saying "don't bother" lol!

This is potentially where I put my foot right it in it so don't take offence.

I'm guessing the 'lines' across her stomach are from her trousers/knickers in which case I'd have cloned them out in Photoshop as they're not very flattering for an otherwise good studio shot. If of course they are scars/stretchmarks and the lady in question takes offence to the offer to touch them up then consider boot fully inserted into throat.

I spotted that too, I'm guessing it might have been where she had been sitting down and her clothes left marks.

For future reference, skin attracts the eye's attention, unwanted or otherwise.

Yeah, I know about the marks. I wondered whether to clone them out, but she really wasn't bothered and so I didn't worry about it.

But interesting that you comment on it, so obviously it's noticed more than both her and I anticipated.

In future, I'll certainly offer to remove them
