Re: Your broadband speed - post here

I've just moved from BE* ASDL upto24mb connection to BT Infinity option 2 and the speed increase is quite large vs my ADSL scores

So far it has been stable and downloading from Newsgroups at full speed , and even Utorrent downloads about 4x faster than my previous ADSL line.

The only thing I did not like so far is the Home hub 3.0 is exposing ports 161 and 4567 to the internet, which appears to be a security risk, but I am thinking of getting my own router anyways to replace the HH3, I also had a couple issues with XBMC bottle necking/buffering streamed video whilst connected to the HH3 via Ethernet.

When you say exposed, do you mean responding as closed rather than 'stealth'? Either way, it's not necessarily a problem in itself, as long as they're not forwarded, it's no more a security risk than responding to ICMP for example. If the Homehub itself is using them for something it may be a different story. However, it may simply be that BT is blocking the ports on its network, responding as 'closed' before they even reach your router; lots of ISPs do this on vulnerable ports like SMB/SSH/Telnet/etc, just some drop packets while others reject.

About XBMC, are you talking about a LAN-LAN connection? Unless it's through a wireless connection, the LAN side is simply a switch so should have no impact.

Re: Your broadband speed - post here

Port 261 is commonly used by snmp, so it could be used by BT to collect statidtical information.

Port 4567 has been flagged on BT forums as a remote login port, possibly used by BT for remote configuration/fault finding.

    http://community.bt.com/t5/BB-Speed-...oor/td-p/59703

I can't find any evidence that the ports are forwarded, so they are probably not an immediate security threat. However the fact that they are known may make them vulnerable to brute force attacks. The dangers of a successgul attack would depend on the admin facilities (if any) made available by a successful login. It might only be read only access to router stats.

I tested the ports @ https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 and it came back the the result failed where as my previous ADSL ISP ( BE* ) had all ported reported as Stealth. The LAN side of things I dunno with my old router that now is no good for Fibre as its ADSL only ( A Netgear DGND3300v2 ) I had no issues with LAN connectivity at all, But now my XBMC box that is now connected via the HH3 it now randomly lags / buffers on 720p and 1080p H264 video files, But is ok on SD 480p files, I Have changed the ethernet port its attached to now to see if that sorts my LAN out with XBMC.

So far Broadband wise this BTInfinity option2 is extremely fast, I now notice sites that can't keep up as well as others do eg. Hexus.net just appears on screen everything loaded etc where as another site I am greeted with a white screen for 10-20secs 1st before the page appears.

Slower than 87% of GB?! Does that qualify me as Broadband Poverty zone?

Respectable, I guess. Quite impressive compared to some similar places near by.
