Re: The Official HTC Desire Thread

Just have a look on XDA Devs, there are quite a few cooked ROMs using the Desire HD as a base

Desire HD roms have been ported, the biggest problem being the bloat (I think the camera problem has been fixed). A lot has to be cut out to make it fit and you are not left with much spare memory on the phone.

If you don't want htc sense go with CM (if you want stable) or oxygen (if you want cutting edge) - both offer numerous advantages and extra customisability over a HTC sense rom. If you do want HTC sense then Leedroid is a good choice.

Re: The Official HTC Desire Thread

Just rooted my phone, after playing with Oxygen and Ginger Villain ROMS (2.3) I decided on LeeDroid for now and 2.3 is a little too unstable for my liking. Also got me a nice 8GB micro SD card to boot.

Re: The Official HTC Desire Thread

I'm running gingervillain & quite liking Gingerbread. Few issues (ie notification drop down data toggle plays up) but after some tweaking it's working nicely.
Got a low mv kernel & a new (not newest radio that seems to give me a bit better battery & better wifi reception. Gingervillain comes with an app to auto download kernels/add-ons which is a really nice touch, saves searching for compatible ones!

I'm also loving the new homescreen transitions in launcher pro!

Not had any stability issues with Leedroid 2.3D It's a really good rom and certainly more stable than my crap Nexus S with Gingerbread on it. My only gripe with later Leedroids are that they are no longer compatable with Brightsilence Espresso themes.

Re: The Official HTC Desire Thread

Having used Leedroid for ages - and running out of space - i've now moved to StarBurst which I really like (plus having 1.5gb of 'internal' memory makes me grin). It also seems faster too..
Make sure you're recovery recognizes ext4 though - clockwork 2.5.0.1 didn't and caused a bit of hassle when getting data2ext to work!

Phew, I've just finished working my way through all 80 pages of this thread! Can't say I read it all, but I'm so keen to get as much info as possible that's relevant to my lovely new HTC Desire (from Three) that I just couldn't miss any of it.

My first few hours with the Desire were full of both delight and frustration. Delight at its web browsing speed and gorgeous screen among other features, frustration at my total ignorance of how to do anything beyond the most basic things. Unlike most of you folk I'm an old geezer and I actually read the manual! So, discarding the useless 'Quick Start' guide that came with the phone I downloaded and started working my way through the Uk Users Manual (http://www.htc.com/uk/userguide.aspx?p_id=312).
While I was doing this my 11-year old daughter grabbed the phone and, in spite of dire warnings from me, started messing about with it. So, while I was ploughing my way through pages of frankly boring text she was going 'Wow!....Cool!....Dad, you should see this!.....Do you want me to put Doodle Jump on it?........I've connected it to my LG Cookie!....I've put Lady Gaga's latest album on it!....." and so on. She found it very intuitive to use....unlike me.

After I managed to pry it from her grubby little hands I got down to using it seriously, but she really did highlight the fact that my frustrations were mostly my fault.

So, I've been using it for a couple of weeks now. Apart from the battery life problem which I know I'm just going to have to get used to there is one really big problem that I have with this phone and that is the very poor mobile reception that I get. Where we live the signal from Three is not great, but with the Desire's predecessor, a Nokia 6500, if I went upstairs I got useable mobile reception. With the Desire I get nothing, not a sausage. I've tried turning off WiFi, which others have said has improved mobile reception, but for me it makes no difference. Is there an app that can improve this by any chance?

Also, can anyone recommend a SatNav app?
I with three and thinking of upgrading to a HTC desire - out of interest what sort of deal did you manage to get out of them?!

Anyone know the answer to this - other than removing the apps (not an option) I have no idea.

Can it be done with a rooted phone? Is it time for me to grow a pair?

So after unlocking my phone (for free!) I finally decided to flash a custom ROM since I got my replacement handset months ago. Now a proud member of Oxygen crew (running Android 2.3). Tis brilliant.

SatNav apps... I've tried copilot live and navigon - i prefer the former. It's nice to have one as a backup when travelling (i use gmaps by default otherwise).
