Re: The Official HTC Desire Thread

Well, I have to say I'm happy with the SLCD so far, few pics below but they don't do the differences justice...

    - SLCD is much crisper/sharper
    - Whites are much better on the SLCD
    - AMOLED is 'punchier' colours but the SLCD is 'brighter' (I find that hard to explain)
    - AMOLED blacks are (obviously) much better (see dark pic)

I've put in pics of the sideways whites in the browser, the pics show the opposite for some reason but the AMOLED is a bit yellower (I know, it doesn't really look it) The SLCD wins this bit by far!

So, a mixed bag, SLCD wins for sharpness, true whites and general brightness. AMOLED for punchy colours and..umm possibly battery life but I'm not going to check that! The pixels are really obvious on AMOLED when you compare the two. Viewing angles are great on them both, both win in one direction but you'd never place your phone at those sorts of angles to notice the difference.

Sunlight legibility is on par, it's really too close to call.

A few pics (yes, I know they're a bit pants!)

It's now all rooted happily (HBOOT 0.93) using unrevoked 3, custom ROM & some power tweaks added, just taking ages to get my apps/contacts back on!

Re: The Official HTC Desire Thread

Just a heads up, you all might know already having had the handset longer than me, but the FriendStream Widget seems to have been causing some general slowdown on my handset, both on the home screen(s) and when using the phone for any other task.

I've removed it from my home screen now and the phone is a decent chunk more responsive, and smoother in operation!

What is the best messenger client for the desire that can handle msn & facebook? I'm currently using ebuddy but wondered about alternatives. Currently running OpenDesire v4.0.15

    Come on Orange...

If they don't do it by the end of next week I'm going to root mine. I'm getting annoyed with all the bloatware on it too.

Incidentally, anyone else have the problem with the SD card going screwy after a while? I've found an app that will remount the card if you get problems, but it's incredibly annoying. More than twice now I've wanted to take a picture (just recently got 30 free MMS messages) only to have the phone tell me that it can't write to the card. Tempted to take it back to Orange next time it happens and demand a new phone (or a new memory card) and while they're at it "why can't I delete all these applications?".

I'm a little lost though, there seems to have been quite a lot of activity r.e. the rooting scene since I last posted in this thread. What's the best course of action now?

Root anyway I'd say, unrevoked takes under a minute, new ROM on your SDCARD & you're ready to go in another 2 or 3 mins.
I did a flash on the train into work this morning (ooh-err missus) - it's that easy & quick

Not had an issue with my card, you tried another in the phone? If it's faulty then report it asap, you might have troubkle if you leave it for ages as they'll question why you didn't report it earlier.

not sure what you are after then, do you think you can physically alter the screen from one type to another through a firmware update or something?

Re: The Official HTC Desire Thread

So, my Desire should be turning up this week, hopefully.

    Couple of things.

What app's and such do people recommend?
Is it really worth "rooting" the thing? If anything goes wrong with the phone, I am pretty much screwed aren't I?
SLCD? Whats this? Apart from a screen?

No, that is all it is. The Desire originally had an AMOLED screen, but Samsung are not able to supply enough of them to meet demand... and they are prioritising their own Galaxy S instead. So it's been replaced with an SLCD from Sony.

Apps? well it depends entirely on what you want to do
