How about we start a new Hexus world?
I started a new server last night running the Moonquest pack in ATLauncher. If anyone's interested PM me for server details. Rockets to the moon (and other planets), airships and ICBMs made it look like a fairly interesting pack! It's inspired by (but not the exact same mod list) as the recent Yogscast videos.
As Allen said back on ye olde Hexus server:
"Please be advised though that due to the amount of unwanted attention a server could get I will not be making these details public, so if I do give them to you, please do not hand them out to anyone you don't know (RL friends who you can slap on my behalf if they mess anything up are ok). With that in mind, I will only give the details to members with reasonable Hexus standings (not rating, just more than a few posts and I will check member length too)."

I am very interested and love Minecraft, PM sent.
What's the Moonquest pack like? Haven't heard of that one before... Might check it out.
I started a local Tekkit Lite server the other day, was nice to use IC2 as it was originally again, without Greg changing everything in the recent packs. And not be forced to pretty much use Thermal Expansion only coz nothing else works as well at early levels. But it runs on 1.4.7 and there are so many issues with that client for me, bugs, lag, etc...
What version are you running Bagnaj? And may I have the IP please?
I've not actually played the Moonquest pack much. I set the server up, built a house, built a Tinker's Construct smeltery and that's about it! I was looking for a way to double ores, but there's no macerator or pulverizer, hence the smeltery. Then I found the smeltery needs to be fuelled by lava, and there are no tesseracts, so no pumping it from the nether. Also no magma crucible, so I can't make lava that way. At that point I semi gave up...
On the surface, Moonquest sounds awesome. Airships, rockets and ICBMs - what's not to love? But there's very little info out there about it and I'm not going to watch Yogscast just to see what they did. Perhaps I'm too stuck in my ways from playing other modpacks...
I'm quite tempted to try something like Resonant Rise, then add Galacticraft and Archimede's Airships to it. I've only had you two PM me about the server, so don't expect a thriving community (details coming soon)! Basically I'm up for running a server, and I don't mind which mod(pack), just Moonquest looked interesting. If a different pack would attract more people I'm happy to change!
Well, I had never heard of it, so I downloaded and played it on single player. After a few minutes I had found 3 different copper ores and 3 different tin ores. That was enough to make me realise they hadn't even bothered (or got around to) sorting out which mod packs spawn which ores, so I gave up. I don't wanna play any more packs that aren't in a fit state to be run for a while without change.
I think for a server to do well, you need longevity, and I have only ever got that from Unhinged, but I know a lot of people don't like it due to the complexity. I didn't at first, when someone else was running a server with GT I gave up after not being able to make a pulveriser/macerator within the first 30 minutes of playing. But after I got used to it, I think it has been one of the best packs I have played so far.
Seeing this thread active again I thought I'd give the game another go, but I just can't get into the game, I've tried, it plays really well, like 240+ frames per second, but starting it is just so slow and I really don't know what I should be doing.
What do you guys recommend as a good starting path?
If you're playing vanilla MC, build a house, a bed, gather supplies (food, torches, weapons, basic armour, furnace or two, crafting bench) and go hunting for diamonds (level 20 (press F3, you're looking for your Y value) and below).
As you dig down (not straight down though - MC rule #1!) you may get lucky and stumble on a cavern, a dungeon, a cave system, an abandoned mineshaft and so on.
Make regular trips back to your house to deposit your items.
Once you've got enough diamonds to make a diamond pick (3) gather some obsidian and make a portal to the nether.
In the nether find a fortress, gather blaze rods, ghast tears, wither skulls, nether wart.
Then you start on potions, stronghold hunting, going to the end to kill the dragon, achievement hunting, beacon making, ...
In reality, you'll find diamonds and want to find even more but when you do find them you won't remember what it was you were hoping to use them for only to wander round a corner and interrupt a creeper convention.
Then you'll start trawling YouTube and forums for things other people have made and end up trying to make a giant automatic farm that harvests, replants and polishes your shoes for you at the push of a button.
It's absorbing if you just play without thinking there's a goal - see where it takes you.
I think that hits the nail on the head for me. For years I have played games with the intention of completing a goal, getting to the end of the story, completing the team based objective, leveling up a gun to unlock a new scope etc... the goal has usually been well defined and very clear. This on the other hand places me in a surreal kind of cubist world and then says, "there you go, get on with it", I'll try what you've suggested as a starting point and see how I like it once I have got my diamonds.
Using your definitions;
The goal is to have fun and make cool stuff.
The end of the story is killing the dragon - reading the story at the end will hurt your head though.
Team based objectives are a bit harder, but that could be a big server build, a contraption, winning a PvP map.
Levelling up a gun/scope is going from a wooden sword to a diamond sword with an enchantment, or a leather helm to a diamond helm.
Open your mind maaaan, embrace the freedom.
If you have hours to kill, have a look for kurtjmac's Far Lands or Bust series on YT, that defines a whole new level of dedication to the sandbox genre.
If you want more direction yo can start to look at custom maps, there's a lot of user made custom story and challenge maps out there.
Yogscast's youtube is a great place to look for examples.
If you want to get into it there are some amazing community building projects too, 2 amazing examples are Minecraft middle earth http://www.mcmiddleearth.com/ From the books more than the films, and Project 1845 http://project1845.com/ whic is trying to create a historically accurate (or as accurate as they can) 1:1 scale model of Beijing City and the surrounding area from the year 1845

I like the mods that minecraft has rather than the game itself. If that makes sense.
