blooming hell my mate got the 2.2 update on his nexus one already
No idea mate. Maybe they wanted you to use Orange Maps instead? Any way having played with Google Earth for a bit, it isn't all that. The built in Google Maps is more than perfect.
Yup:-

Very nice! I just hope HTC follow suit soon. Appearently HTC have said they would start with the desire but gave no date or timescale in which they would release it...
Im jealous already and I havent even got my phone yet! I would have bought the N1 if it was more available sim-free in the UK without having to import it from the US.

Managed to drop mine onto a marble floor the other day, fortunately it was in its case. Small ding top left of the device now. Impressed that there was no more damage. Was a heart in mouth moment though...

Given how close the Desire and N1 are hardware wise, you'd hope they wouldn't take too long. Having said that, I think it's more about the software running on Android (like sense) that will be the cause of any changes.
I expect putting a barebone 2.2 ROM on the Desire will be doable within the next few weeks.
I'm loving this handset at the moment but I do have 1 complaint about it.
My router is setup with SSID hidden and when I add the router using the name and WPA key it still does not find the router and just stays scanning for ages.
I can find the router instantly if SSID is enabled (like I've had to have it all weekend), but as soon as SSID is hidden the phone does not want to play ball at all.
Iphone worked fine finding and connecting to my router with SSID hidden etc, so this appears to be a small issue with the HTC desire.
Router is a Linksys WRT160NL - Mixed mode (B/G/N) - Wide channels enabled ; just in case your wondering

How much did you have to pay through customs? I dont think I could afford anything over £420 (paying £399 for the desire) The N1 would be £366 right now but its just the added cost.
Edit: If you can prove that it wouldnt cost much more than the desire then I would cancel my desire order now and buy the N1 from Google Would probably turn up quicker tbh...
