Singh,
Have you updated the rom since Sundays official release or are still using the one you mentioned earlier?

Right, I have stopped that Voda update. Is there a way to get 2.2, but not get the branded rubbish, without rooting the phone?
Or doing anything that invalidates the warranty?
I'm going to do it on the weekend. Will probably follow this guide
http://androidforums.com/htc-desire/...2-quicker.html
But it is worth reading a couple of other guides from xda developers first.
As long as you flash an official rom and don't root I don't see how htc will refuse a warranty claim...

Just updated with : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741775
Pretty much stock 2.2 with rooting and other very small changes.
Only had a play for 10 mins but happy so far. It was very easy. I've gone from not knowing much about Android flashing to understanding most of it within a few hours. It's all pretty straight forward stuff.
Titanium Backup Pro is fantastic. It backed up everything including text messages and other obscure things and reinstalled them fine.
The only 'problem' I found with it was when it installs the app, it asks you the usual "do you want this app to install" page. I think it asks for about the first 30 apps then just installs them. If you get the donate version (it's very cheap really) it apparently doesn't do this - certainly one I'll be buying now I know it works! Will make playing with ROMs very easy
Titanium BUP is great I got the pro version too courtesy of android@modaco, along with wavesecure
Ive also got Rom Manager installed which is great for backing up as well as installing roms, I like it that much I'm more than happy to pay the $3.99 or whatever it costs as it saves making gold cards etc much more noob friendly imho

I've done it
Note that if you use the official update unmodified you get the new bootloader which cannot yet be rooted (so you're stuck on that ROM until such time as it's been cracked). I went for the official ROM but modified so that:
1. Bootloader remains at 81
2. It's pre-rooted
So what did I do?
First, I created a Goldcard - This was a bit fiddly but BY FAR the easiest method was to use this tool which does all the hard work for you:
http://android.modaco.com/content/so...-goldcardtool/
I found that the instructions based on using a hex editor a little flawed - and it usually generated an non-working microsd card. The tool worked much better.
You'll need the android SDK from:
http://dl.google.com/android/android...06-windows.zip
(the tool will use this - or at least I think it did)
You'll need an empty microsd card - formatted to FAT32 before using this.
Once you have a goldcard you can place the following radio and froyo images on it (leave them as zipped).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741775
(these will give you a nice stock HTC froyo ROM but with ROOT which means it's much more flexible - of course you'll also be 'unbranded' afterwards).
Now you have your goldcard, time to root the phone - use:
http://unrevoked.com/#desire
This was very easy - the only hiccup being you'll probably need the USB driver to make it work - download this first and unzip it somewhere so you're ready:
http://www.unrevoked.com/rootwiki/li...usb-driver.zip
Also make sure that USB debugging is enabled on your phone (under PC connection settings).
Now run the unrevoked tool and follow the instructions - use device manager to install the HBOOT driver for the phone if required.
Now that the phone has been rooted we can update very easily - with the goldcard in, shutdown the phone and hold down the VOL DOWN - keep it held down and power on. The phone will go into the HBOOT loader - follow the instructions and select recovery. Now a custom recovery environment will start - this will let you select your update ZIPs and apply them. Do the radio first, and then the froyo update. Ignore the stuff about update.zip and choose to select your own zip file. Follow the instructions - i.e. when it says choose reboot to apply go 'back' through the menus to choose the reboot option. Let the phone fully boot with the radio update, then power down and repeat the procedure to enter HBOOT and then recovery so that you can select froyo.
After that, tis done..
Bit of a brain dump but hopefully that helps. I'm now on 2.2 - completely unbranded, still have the good bootloader and i've got root access. Take your time, read what the tools are telling you and it's fairly easy.
nice one, might try that tonight.
So is everyone's general opinion of 2.2 "it's a bit faster & has a torch" ?
I tried this last night but could not get the PC to find the new drivers, I had installed the new Voda bloatware update and have bootloader 80.
Ill try again maybe after the weekend when I have more time.

A different issue to all the ROM discussion
I'd been getting really annoyed that my Exchange account was not syncing, weather was not downloading, facebook widget not updating etc. Looked through a whole host of setting and everything looked fine. Eventually discovered that Settings -> Account & Sync -> Auto-sync was turned off.
Now everything is back working as it should.
I guess I expeced everything to have it's own setting rather than all being grouped together as that's not how Windows Mobile worked. Part of the learning curve I guess
I had this too mate.
Quite simply, you need to do it once in the recovery boot thing (make sure you have debugging on) and then again when in Windows.
I had the "this drive isn't for this hardware" thing, but I force installed it anyway and it worked 100%, rooting it and installing the custom recovery image without issue.
