Are you paying that upfront cost for a shorter contract or what? Cause there's plenty of deals out there with no upfront payment :s

A long long time. I wasn't too hopeful on it working, but I figured it was worth a try. I don't know if they can give you upgrades a bit earlier than normal, or if they're exactly the same as dealing with the network directly.

Looks like the standard period for upgrades on Orange is 3 months before your contract ends. On the orange site for me it says

    your contract ends:
    30/10/2011

    next upgrade date:
    01/08/2011

So you could probably do it through Orange directly next month, but it's worth a try with mobiles, worse that happens is they say you're not eligible.

Re: The Official HTC Desire Thread

Definitely getting a Desire but what are the supplied earphones like for the HTC Desire, I imagine they are very standard like usual supplied earphones?

I've currently got a C905 with some handsfree in-ear Sony headphones and they are awesome for the price. But I do like that the supplied earphones with the Desire have a MIC and answer/skip/rewind buttons on them so does anybody know of some good in-ear headphones with those functionalities on them?

    Apps:

    1. Bettercut: $1.99, but allows you to rename shortcuts and alter icons. WARNING: Does not allow modification of existing icons on th desire YET, but just create and new one the way you wnat it, and replace the old one. also, I can't get Mail or Messages to either rename or change icon, even if creating a new shortcut: it defaults to standard name and icon. Otherwise, good. And you can get free icon packs.
    2. spirit level. Just because.
    3. Metal detector. As above.
    4. Game: Flood it
    5: Game: Jewels
    6: Game: Papertoss
    7: Game: Space Physics
8: itunes remote: Google "android itunes remote". not on market place. Not got it to work myself yet, but my library is odd.
    9. Google skymap. Possibly preinstalled.
    10. Periodic Table. Just because.
    11. Droid comics. Google it. Allows reading of CBR, CBZ, which are surprisingly good on this screen.
12: Nasa Photos. From market place
    13: Barcode scanner: Fun.
    14: Advanced Task Killer.

that's as far as I've gone so far. I've also splashed out on Documents To Go, as I keep an excel spreadsheet of my finances. It's good. My desire has replaced my PDA.

If anyone, like me, gets very frustrated by apparently not being able to alter your own contact card in People by long pressing it, do this instead: Select by short press, then hit "menu" down the bottom, and "edit".

Took my days to figure that out. Sometimes, I'm just not that smart.

Oh, and if you're trying to figure out how to get Street view (as there IS a streetview setting in there), you access it by getting the street you want, and long click. It will say "loading address". If there is a picture of the street that then comes up, click that to get street view. And ifyou then go "menu", "compass", and hold the handset up, it will rotate the view as you move the handset. Seriously cool.

New tip: to swtich between open apps, press and hold "home".

Re: The Official HTC Desire Thread

T-Mobile shop in Leeds saying they've had no Desires in yet (at all). Finding it incredibly frustrating - ordered one from T-Mobile website last Tue (30th March), didn't say out of stock but not delivered in 2 days as promised, and after 7 days still nothing.

Finally got an "It's on its way" email yesterday - and today, after a 9 day wait, the postman turns up with an HD2! Couldn't make it up. Phoned them, they admited mistake, but it's me who has to go to Post Office to return it (& can't do that until they send me a bag to put it in; they won't let me self-package or hand it over to T-Mobile shop, despite it being unopened).

And - inevitably - they're now out of stock again. I wonder which lucky punter has got my Desire!

After waiting this long, I could hardly hate T-Mobile much more. Also can't find anywhere with them in stock now, other than loads for sale on Ebay from people who got sent them from T-Mobile without wanting the u/g.

    Hmm.

Re: The Official HTC Desire Thread

Various websites inaccurately reporting the Desire as being in stock now "everywhere"; spoke to T-Mobile shop in Leeds yesterday and they said "10-14 days".

Cost me £6.70 to post back the HD2 they sent in error; now 12 days in, £170 poorer, with no phone. And no response to any emails or two letters. Got to love T-Mob!

Re: The Official HTC Desire Thread

I got my Desire this Friday from Vodafone. Here is my adventure:
I did have a Sony Eric C902 at £30pm contract.
Put order though for HTC Desire upgrade on Sunday 4th. Website said Desires arrive on the 12th. FREE at £30pm, so no change in cost for me - nice.
Wednesday 7th email saying "Due to unexpected demand... no phones for 12 days!!" Unexpected? lol.
Thursday 8th email saying that phone has been shipped. Get home that evening to find that Parcel Force had tried to deliver it that afternoon!! WTF!
Phone them up and get them to deliver to local post office. No point if faffing around trying to get them to deliver it to home. No one in you see.
Friday 9th, girlfriend collects it from post office. I drive home that lunch time like a loony to collect it!! Get back to the office and everyone is "oooing" and "ahhing" all over it. And these are mostly iPhone peeps.

I love my Desire (but not in that way you understand )

Being a total n00b at Smartphones and Android usage I'd like to thank everyone for the 'little' tips on this thread. It's the little things that make these things a pleasure to use. More tips please

And if anyone knows the settings to get Googlemail to work then I'd be most pleased

Guppy, The supplied phones are crap. Those big things that hurt when shoved in your ears.
    I use Sony MDR-EX71SLB Fontopia Headphones £18.
Good audio. Comfortable. And good price.

Yeah those earphones are awesome but I'm looking for in-ear handsfree earphones, i.e. earphones that have a MIC built in and preferably previous/next buttons like on the supplied HTC earphones.

The only ones I seem to find are usually built for a specific phone so they don't have the 3.5mm jack that is required for the Desire.

not sure if it would work but the newer nokia handsets have headphones and remotes with a 3.5mm jack, whether the remote would work on the htc tho i've got no idea

Apparently there's a shortage of these and they have been selling very well, Hopefully more stock will be available to all retailers very shortly!

Also a lot of people on other forums complaining their screens have a pink tinge to them but that is one of the drawbacks to the screen tech this phone uses. Apparently turning the brightness all the way up on them blocks out the pink tinge to the screen. Got to wait till July for my upgrade so will see if there is anything better out by then.

Anyone here having the issue with the pink screens?
