Re: The Official HTC Desire Thread

Anandtech have done a quick look at froyo and benchmarked it compared to 2.1 with some quite outstanding results...

the Linpack benchmark shows a whopping 427% improvement from v2.1, while the BenchmarkPi and Sunspider tests post approximately a 140 - 150% boost in performance. Looks like the JIT compiler packs some serious under-the-hood optimizations
I can't wait for this to come through now and make my Desire even faster than ever!!!!

But that doesn't appear to translate into significant improvements in *actual* usage I believe? What is the effect of these things being faster?

Loading web pages and apps etc quicker, potential for better gaming on lower specs, I think any speed improvement for a device from a FREE update is fantastic! A lot of it is down to s new compiler referred to as JIT (just in time).

This exact situation makes my Desire reboot after 7 minutes. Factory reset has been tried.

If I unplug it and let the gps run, there is no rebooting.

If its the same amount of time, everytime I would say it sounds more like a cache limitation. I did notice the browser and maps have a 6MB cache. Used to be around 10 - 15mb on the older Cupcake release.

At present I am having issues with the battery and making it last all day. Only 2 days old so far so hoping the battery gets better with charging cycles over time.

It does get better. Plus there are widgets that let you turn the screen brightness up/down and turn the various radios on or off (3G data saps power, for example). That and the fact that you're probably playing with it a lot at the moment

Don't worry about killing apps to save battery - there's really no point - unless the battery consumption report shows an app you've installed is misbehaving.

Well last night I went on a bit of a buying spree on the Android market and bought up a whole load of old school shoot em ups. Can't beat good old 2D shmups.

As for playing with it, using it about as much as I was with the G1, most likely Twidroid and constant gmail notifications draining it to.

which shoot em ups, and are they any good?

I'm waiting for an equivalent of Cube runner for the iphone. Someone made one, but has removed it, and I have x racer or 3d racer or something, which is awesome, but I want my cubes!

The decent one was £1.99 and it is called "Sky Force Reloaded"

Pretty decent, half way through the game atm. The other two were part of some emulator pack but they force close all the time. Tempted to try and make one myself. Played them for years and I am looking for something to get me back into programming again so might do this on and off and get a shmup built.

The free version of Super KO Boxing 2 is a good game to. Check the version on the Android Market as there is a free one and someone trying to palm off the same game for £3.99 I think it was.

I know, that's kinda my point too

By the way, Google are going to be making an operating system for smart phone devices.
