    Re: Elite : Dangerous

Ok, so thanks to a generous donation I now have a Joystick on the way and have also picked up a copy of the game.

I will start on Solo to get to grips with things then eventually transfer the ship across.

I am sure the knowledge base of this threads users is impressive, so are there any tips you can share before I begin... mistakes to avoid, things to keep a note of etc?

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

I found the hard part on starting up was trading enough to get myself a decent Frame Shift Drive. My start system felt pretty cut off with the small ~7 ly range you start off with.

Trade, get a usable FSD, use that to get better trades. It is a pretty slow start, specially as the "find trades" tool at http://www.elitetradingtool.co.uk/ is currently disabled. Before long you can be doing over 1000cr per tonne, but with only 4T hold space you need a few trips to get the money flowing. The watershed moment is getting the Hauler as that starts with 8T of hold space upgradable to 16T and upgradable to a decent range.

OTOH, perhaps these days with exploring making reasonable money, you could replace the cargo hold with a fuel scoop (to avoid getting stranded somewhere that doesn't have a space station to refuel at) and just go for a cruise, selling data off for upgrades as you go.

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

Hints, tips... I could go on for ages!!

    - Don't boost into solid obbjects!
Play around with the stick (unplugged, if you like) and just get a feel for where all the buttons are, where your hand naturally sits, etc. Then make sure you assign the Boost/Afterburner command to a button you can easily reach when you need it, but can NOT easily hit it by accident!!
A lot of semi-Newbies upgrade to a nice, shiny ship like a Cobra, Viper or even an Adder, rig it up with nice stuff and then seem to accidentally boost headfirst into the station...!!

    - Take your time when docking/undocking inside a station.
Outposts are open, but the station's letterbox entrance can be deceptive. So many posts from Newbies having trouble docking, when most of them are just trying to go too fast before they can walk. Speed comes with time and practice...

    - Mass matters.
All ships have mass. Bigger ships have greater mass and therefore will usually take longer to turn, move, get going and especially to slow down!

You'll one day go from flying a nippy little Eagle to flying a fully laden Type 6 and then all your practice goes out the window when you forget that your new ship is carrying 100T of cargo... and you go through the docking hatch at full speed, only to find you physically cannot slow down in time to avoid smashing into the back wall!!

    - Do the training missions.
Do them several times. They're not exactly that comprehensive, but they give you a nice basic introduction to many things and make good playgrounds.

    - Begin by taking just your starting Sidewinder and go muck about a LOT.
Try everything, see what all the commands do and muck around as much as you want - If you die, you get a free Sidewinder as a replacement and if it all goes belly-up, you can clear your savegame and restart without losing anything!

    - Use the above method to get to grips with combat. Remember you have what's called 6-DOF, as in Six Degrees of Freedom, or rather six directions in which to move - You can pitch, roll and yaw just like in a normal aeroplane, but you can also thrust up-down, left-right and forward-backward. These all combine with the main throttle setting to pull off some pretty fancy manoeuvres - Play around and practice incorporating them into your flying, as you'll have loads more fun once you can do these. Once that's in place, you can start turning Flight Assist off (momentarily, or for most of the time), which is where it gets really fun.

I realise you quite probably know all this already, but it's amazing how many people actually forget when it comes to flying, so just a friendly reminder.

Many things can get you fined, depending on where you are when you do them. Some will get you an immediate bounty and you'll be hunted, including ignoring your fines.
Pay off your fines as soon as possible.

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

I must admit I lost a ship by hitting the back of a space station. Was coming in under silent running (as some pesky ship got in my way while taking out pirates) and instead of hitting landing gear on my throttle stick it hit boost and hit the back wall at 350 in my Asp.

    550k later.

Rule #1 is unbind jettison all cargo.
Rule #2 is always hit your gear before entering a station
Rule #3 refer to rule 1

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

Rule 2 sucks an doesn't apply to Anaconda owners.

    My thoughts:

Don't fly what you can't afford. You MUST have a cash buffer of AT LEAST the rebuy value of your ship. Can't stress that enough, even in a slightly pimped Sidey.

Boost effects ALL thrusters, not just the mains.

Always target the Powerplant sub target.

You don't have to trade. I've never traded a single tonne of cargo and fly a nicely upgraded Vulture. Trading is quicker but very dull (sorry but it is lol)

Find a Resourse Extraction Site (RES) in the rings of a gas giant somewhere. Wait for the System Authority ships to jump in. Shadow them and watch them attack baddies. Once said baddies shields are down and their hull is around 20%, wade in and finish the job. Easy cash. Rinse, repeat.

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

Another tip: At some point you will be in supercruise and the screen will go all blue with splash text on the screen saying "Interdiction". Confused the heck out of me first time it happened as I had no idea what was going on.

Another ship is pulling you out of lightspeed and back into normal space, usually pirate who will attack but sometimes police who will just scan you an move on.

Drop the throttle back to zero which gives in to the chase, then as soon as you turn up in normal space throttle right up, boost, run like the clappers. Your FSB should come back online fairly quick, hit the jump key and be on your way. At some point you will find yourself interdicted when you are flying an Asp bristling with weapons in which case the pirate won't know what hit them, but until then most of us just run.

The drones in the new Beta makes it sound like mining might be worth another go.

Not sure - the drones are consumable, so wondering how they'll implement it from a cost perspective. As much as they might make it quicker to mine, if it doesn't make it any more profitable then I can't see the point. Time will tell I guess.

I'm in the same boat, want to rank up with the Empire so I can get a Courier when it's released. I'm currently Allied with the Empire, but not had any missions appear. No idea. :S

Ammo is consumable, yet bounty hunting seems to make a profit so it should be possible to balance that. My last mining trip I was out ages just to fill a 16T hold in the Cobra. I did see a comment that this was intended to make eg the type 9 a viable mining ship if you don't have to scoop (which could get a bit brown trousers in the Cobra!).

True, but that's only recently been the case. Bounty hunting was nearly a break even exercise at one point. I do hope it helps miners, I think they've had a raw deal really as of late.

Another hint. Don't open fire on anything until your scanners have finished confirming the ship is wanted. Even if others are opening fire, until your systems have pegged them as wanted, opening fire will land you in trouble!

I am sure the knowledge base of this threads users is impressive, so are there any tips you can share before I begin... mistakes to avoid, things to keep a note of etc?
Where in the galaxy are you? If you are near LHS 3447 I'm happy to drop off a free paladium to get you up and running.... also there is a simple 1 hop trade route here that pays about 4-6k per run in a 4 bay sidewinder. One night of graft and you'll have all u need for an upgrade, each run takes about 10 minutes once you get sorted on where to slow down in supercruise / docking.

I'm new too so if you fancy a wing, we could do an evenings trading and we'd both be up to speed!

There may be easier ways but this is ultra simple.
