Finally think I've figured the battery prob - it's surreptitiously turning on both Bluetooth & Wi-Fi (or at least looking, then switching off again). Any idea how to disable that? Sucks the battery dry in well under a day.

I have BT and WiFi on 24/7 and my battery lasts 24 > 36 hours with quite heavy usage.
Have you got JuiceDefender?
Ta, will try it - using Battery Booster.
Seems I'm the only one with this prob - like you, it used to last 24/36hrs. And it isn't the battery's fault: I use two interchangeably, charging one overnight. Though I still think it's got something to do with it searching out Bluetooth/Wi-Fi connections, without being asked.
@MyCarsA.. - Juicedefender has definitely helped, thanks.
Hi people ... I just wanted to know about rooting and roms for the desire..what are the advantages and
Disadvantages of rooting and using roms... also what is the best Rom right now or coming soon..
Thanks

I'm thinking of getting a Desire, but before I shell out £400 for one, can I just make sure that I've got this right: All the phones you buy from retailers (Amazon/Play etc.) are unlocked and I can just transfer the SIM from my old phone to it and it'll all work fine? When it comes to updating it to v2.2 (if it ain't already), as it's unlocked will it search out the "standard" update, or will go through the operator? It's cheaper for me to do it this way (currently on a T-Mobile contract- £5/month with Unlimited Internet) than to get a new contract as I don't use very many minutes or texts.
Yes it'd be unlocked (network wise). Don't worry about 2.2 updating because rooting and choosing your own ROM is a: a bloody good idea (for all sorts of reasons) and b: really easy to do (as in follow simple instructions, click boom). I'm on T-Mobile too and this is what i've done.
2.2 seems to also give me more battery life, about 25% and also more volume in the music player
Flashed Leedroid 2.2a last night, gives many more SetCPU speed options (as well as conservative govenor) that my basic ROM didn't give me.
I'm missing some things like battery/genie widget, I can (and have) uninstall them but can't use them either in Sense or using any other launcher. Oh well no big loss. What is that Genie widget anyway? Seems as fast as my other ROM even with a few extras, not much that I'll actually use but it can't hurt to have.
It's A2SD+ & I formatted my card with ROM manager, 512mb with 0mb swap but how do I tell if it's working? Apps space still shows 147mb total?
Well I got my Desire last week and I'm still playing around with it, seeing what it can do as it's my first smart phone. It's nice to be able to actually browse websites at a reasonable speed. I haven't rooted it as I don't need to at the moment. Anyway, here's my layout at the moment: -
Lock Screen:
WidgetLocker is used to put widgets on the lock screen. you can also use it to change the way you unlock the phone.
Home Screen:
LauncherPro (the free version) is used for a different dock. It also allows more icons on screen (I'm set-up as 6x6). Also got new icons and removed the text labelling from them.
ExtendedControls allows for various things to be turned on and off, as well as the battery read-out.
Left:
Just weather widgets (from Beautiful Widgets).
Right:
3G Watchdog for the usage readout.
Internal Memory Widget and SD Card Memory Widget for the various memory usage read-outs.
Woohoo, just got my Desire HD! Shame I'm now at work and can't play with it yet!
On first look, 2 small issues:
1) When the phone is switched off, the alarm clock doesn't work. All my previous (and cheap) phones manage this! Means I have to leave the phone on over night, wasting battery!
2) There's no | key on the keyboard. That character is in some of my password, so now I just can't log into certain things. I guess I can download a new keyboard, seeing as this is android and all, however I've never used a smartphone or any apps so I'm not sure what they can do and if that's possible. Guess I'll have to look into it!
Use flight mode and you will use hardly any battery overnight

Smartphones are all like this (as far as I know) when theya re off, they really are off.
A day of moderate to heavy use is about what you get out of a smarphone like this, so over night just charge it, ready to go again in the morning. That's what I do and it saves having to worry about it the following day.
Man, and I thought I was a tight 'tard
